RIM’s BlackBerry Synchronization Suite Headed to the Mac, At Last

Looks like RIM's has decided to play nice with Mac owners. Or, perhaps, the Apple computer market has become too large for the wireless e-mail and smartphone leader to ignore any longer.

RIM's BlackBerry Desktop Software has long been the sole province of Windows computers. This will soon change, as the mob-e-mail and smartphone leader today announced plans to deliver a version of the BlackBerry synchronization and desktop management software for Mac OS X.

Best of all, the software, which is slated for release in September, will be free. Today, BlackBerry users with Macs must turn to Mark/Space's The Missing Sync ($39.95) to get the same type of functionality (more, in fact) their PC brethren have long taken for granted,

Here are some key features of the BlackBerry Desktop Software for Mac:

  • Sync your iTunes playlists, calendars, contacts, notes and tasks
  • Add/Remove applications
  • Update your device when new software becomes available
  • Backup and restore your device data with such features like automatically scheduled backups and optional encryption.
  • Manage multiple devices
  • Support for Mac OS 10.5.5 and above.

You can sign up here to be notified when the software is available.

Today's news isn't the first regarding RIM dipping its toe into the realm of Mac OS syncing. Last December, it introduced a preview edition of BlackBerry Media Sync for Mac, an application that allows users to sync iTunes or Windows Media Player music files with a BlackBerry smartphone.
