Palm Re-Establishes Pre’s iTunes Connection

Take that Apple! Palm strikes back.

Only a week after Apple unceremoniously broke the Palm Pre's iTunes connectivity, Palm has reestablished its new smartphone’s connection to Cupertino's media management software. So, with webOS 1.1, Pre users will once again be able to synchronize media (video, pictures, music) with their device. That is until Apple releases iTunes 8.2.2.

The official Palm blog reads:

Palm webOS 1.1 re-enables Palm media sync. That’s right -- you once again can have seamless access to your music, photos and videos from the current version of iTunes (8.2.1).

According to the Palm blog, webOS 1.1 will be delivered to all Pre users over-the-air.

The reestablishment of iTunes connectivity isn't the only thing the webOS update brings to the table, not by a long shot. Here are some of more of the new features in webOS 1.1, including several that make the Pre more enterprise friendly:

  • NFL Mobile Live from Sprint
  • Default reminder interval is 15 minutes if you get 1.1 on a new phone. Otherwise, it does not change
  • Photo app starts up faster
  • Better clock time zone support
  • Alarm appearance changes
  • Facebook friends adds/deletes reflected correctly in Contacts Facebook account
  • Exchange ActiveSync supports IP address for server name
  • Support for self-signed certificates with multiple common names has been added.
  • Exchange ActiveSync policies support for requiring passwords, locking the phone after a period inactivity and remote wipe
  • Emoticon support in various messaging types
  • Message times can be shown in 24 hour time format
  • Missed call notification enhanced
  • Syncs with iTunes 8.2.1
  • Symbols from symbols table supported in browser
  • New browser gesture (short swipe left to right in the gesture area) same as Forward button
  • Wikipedia mobile pages displayed instead of conventional desktop format view
