Last week, Samsung introduced a new smartphone, the Solstice, and added support for two-way synchronization and push e-mail in an Exchange environment for another model, the I8910 HD, also known as the OminaHD. That same ActiveSync client, called RoadSync S60, was updated for a number other Symbian/S60 smartphones as well.

Although the Samsung Solstice is an entry-level smartphone with a consumer bent, it offers enough in the way of features for non-demanding business users.

Like many of today's handset, the Solstice is a touch handset. You use Samsung's fingertip-friendly TouchWiz interface to manage the device through its 3.0 display. You enter text through a virtual, landscape QWERTY keyboard,

The Solstice offers one-touch access to applications, including those to social networks like Facebook and MySpace, in addition to Yahoo! oneSearch. And, like any self-respecting cell phone today, it supports SMS, MMS, IM and e-mail messaging

There's also Bluetooth, a two megapixel camera for picture and video, a microSD slot, in addition to video and audio players. It supports AT&T's 3G network.

The Solstice is due to be released by AT&T on August 2nd. It will go for $100 with a two-year contract and a $20 or more messaging or data plan.

As for the, I8910 HD (OmniaHD), Samsung’s partnered with DataViz to bring that company’s RoadSync ActiveSync client to the new smartphone, which runs on the Symbian/S60 5th Edition platform. According to DataViz, the free full functioning license of RoadSync is optimized for Symbian S60 5th Edition and provides Samsung customers with built-in secure, wireless and direct push synchronization of corporate e-mail, calendar, contacts and tasks with Microsoft Exchange Server.

An update that provides additional functionality to both Samsung and Nokia device users was also released this week. This update enhances the current user experience by offering the following additions:

Improved Setup with Auto-Discovery Service: Enter an e-mail address and password and the Exchange 2007 Auto-Discovery service will get mobile professionals setup quickly, according to DataViz.

There also the addition of an extended touch-friendly toolbar for the more efficient management of messages and basic support for Google Calendar and Google Contact Sync for non-Exchange users.

Lastly, RoadSync now supports all S60 5th Edition devices, including the Samsung I8910 HD (OminaHD ), of course, but also the Nokia N97 and the 5800 XpressMusic. It is also compatible with the latest 3rd Edition (non-touch screen) handsets, such as the Samsung innov8, Nokia E71x, E75, N86 and others.

RoadSync S60 version 4.004 is immediately available from DataViz in English, French, Italian, German, Spanish and Portuguese. Those who received RoadSync preloaded on their Samsung I8910 HD (OmincaHD) or previously purchased version 4.0 are entitled to a free update by selecting "Check for Updates" in the main RoadSync application on their device.
