At close to three years old, Palm Treo 680 is ancient by smartphone standards. There are still a number of users out there, however. AT&T Wireless would like those who haven't already updated their smartphone's firmware (the latest being version 2.11 from 2007) to do so as soon as possible.
The carrier's sending out text messages to Treo 680 owners asking them to update their smartphone's software by September 15th. If they don't comply, AT&T says they won't be able to use their devices on AT&T's network anymore. According to
Palminfocenter, the operator cites a pending "network upgrade" as the reason for the urgency.
