i-Mate: A Smartphone Maker Bites the Dust

Competition from the likes of Apple, RIM and HTC's proved too much for Windows Mobile smartphone-marker i-Mate, which closed shop this week—in spite of a reorganization a few months ago. Based in the United Arab Emerites, i-Mate was known for its eclectic line-up of business-focused handhelds. According to a report, it told employees to take a couple of months of unpaid last weekend. Then, the next day, the company informed workers it was closing. Employees who tried to go to i-Mate's offices found them locked out. Back in February, i-mate introduced what was likely one of its last devices, a rugged handheld called the 810F.
