The deadline to enter Verizon Wireless' Apply Your Ideas mobile application competition is coming up fast, on Sunday the 20th. The carrier, the largest in the U.S., created the contest to encourage developers to join its Verizon Developer Community (VDC) and promote its upcoming app store.

Applications must be new to the BlackBerry platform and work on the BlackBerry Storm to be eligible to win. VDC members will select winners in five categories (Connect, Entertain, Guide, Save Time, and Enhance Living). There will also be a People’s Choice and Grand Prize winners, that latter to selected by a panel of judges.

The Grand Prize winner will take home $50,000; 200 percent of the application's revenue for a year (to a maximum of actual revenue plus $100,000); and a featured spot at the launch of the Verizon V CAST Apps storefront, among other prizes.

Unlike with other carriers, Verizon plans to only include its own app store on the cell phones it carries. So no BlackBerry Application Storefront on a RIM smartphone the operator sells, for example. Although, it appears, users will be free to download and install the app store themselves
