Palm Bids Goodbye to Windows Mobile

To much fanfare, Palm—in a joint press conference with Microsoft and Verizon Wireless—introduced the first Treo to run on Microsoft's Windows Mobile platform. Yesterday, to no hoopla at all, the now struggling PDA and smartphone pioneer announced it would no longer use Redmond's mobile operating system for its devices.

Instead, Palm will concentrate on extending the number of products running on its new webOS platform. The first webOS smartphone, the Palm Pre, is being offered by Sprint in the U.S. with the second, the smaller Pixi model, slated to follow later this year.

Here's what Palm CEO Jon Rubinstein had to say:

Due to importance of webOS to our overall strategy, we've made the decision to dedicate all future development resources to the evolution of webOS. Which means that going forward, our roadmap will include only Palm webOS-based devices.

The last Palm model to run on Windows Mobile is the Treo Pro, also offered by Sprint.
