Palm's Pre smartphone, so far only available through CDMA/EV-DO 3G carriers in North America, will soon make its way across the Atlantic.

Palm announced today that O2 will be the exclusive provider of the first webOS smartphone in Europe, starting with German on October 13th and followed by the United Kingdom and Ireland three days later. This will also be the first GSM/HSPDA 3G-edition of the Pre.

The other day Palm dropped Microsoft's Windows Mobile platform to focus on building devices around the webOS. The second of these smartphones, the Pixi, is due to ship during the fourth quarter.

Interpret analyst Michael Gartenberg just released a report showing that the Pre is second in mindshare to the Apple iPhone. An impressive achievement considering the Pre has only been out for a few months.

And yet, although the Pre has done well, it has not performed as well as expected in the marketplace. This should change, however, as Gartenberg pointed out in a tweet that "mindshare becomes market share," but only over time.
