Will 13 prove to be a lucky number in the smartphone wars for lG?

LG, one of the largest phone vendors in the world, intends to become a major player when it comes to Windows Mobile handsets as well. It plans to release thirteen Microsoft-run smartphone—that's right (you read it correctly)—by the close of next year.

This onslaught will begin with three models planned for this year; starting with the LG-GW550 (pictured), the company's first ever QWERTY bar-type smartphone—kind like the Samsung Jack.

Due to ship in Europe, Asia, and the U.S., the LG-GW550 will run on Windows Mobile 6.5 and sports a 2.4-inch QVGA display. There are also two cameras, one for conferencing, and other business-centric features, according to LG.

Less is known about the two remaining Windows Mobiles for 2009 from LG. All three initial LG Windows Mobile models will include LG's proprietary S-Class User Interface, which offers a 3D experience that works with Microsoft’s operating system.

The latest version of Windows Mobile, 6.5, includes an upgraded Internet Explorer Mobile browser with a new engine and a customized version of Adobe Flash Lite for accessing sites previously unable to render properly on a handheld. It will also include free access to Microsoft’s My Phone service where users can perform automatic backups of photos, music, contacts and text messages from their smartphone to the Web for access any time.

Launched in July, the LG Application Store will offer add-ons for all three devices as well as future LG smartphone devices. The site expects to offer up to 2,000 downloadable applications by the end of year. They should support Microsoft’s Windows Marketplace for Mobile as well, of course.
