With the Xperia X1, Sony Ericsson, known for its Symbian/UIQ smartphones, entered the crowded world of Windows Mobile phones. While the Xperia X1 received some good write ups, it didn't exactly set the world afire. Well, Sony Ericsson's gonna try again. The cell phone partnership just announced the Xperia X2, a new high-end Windows Mobile smartphone.

The Xperia X2 is chock full of features and will be one of the first devices to run on Windows Mobile 6.5 Pro, making its 3.2-inch WVGA display a touch screen. It looks a lot like the X1 with a horizontal sliding QWERTY thumb-keyboard.

The X2, like the X1, will sport Sony Ericsson's panel interface, which runs on top of Windows Mobile, well.

Additional specs include a 8.1 megapixel camera (wow), 3G, Wi-Fi, a TV-out port, stereo speakers, support for microSDHC cards (up to 32GB in size”), Bluetooth and GPS.

The quad-band smartphone will come in two flavors, one with support for North American-style 3G and another for everywhere else. It is due for release in the fourth quarter for an as-of-yet unnamed price.

The video below shows Aaron Duke, a Sony Ericsson product manager, showing off the Xperia X2's panel interface.
