i ran a serial port connectivity test on my dell dimension pc, and found that my serial port (com1), cables, and hp are all working correctly, which implies some problem where windows meets the connectivity software (baud and other settings all match, so no problem there).
the connectivity pack user's guide suggests installing the hp connectivity software into dos with windows closed (it specifically says NOT to click on the dos icon in windows). since you cannot boot to dos on a windows me machine (as far as i know), i ignored this instruction, and installed from the dos icon. no problems installing, and i can navigate all the cpack menus on the pc, but is it possible that this is the source of my problem? i still get "cannot establish a remote connection".
