The good news is that there is a Linux version of the QtopiaDesktop software. The version supplied with the SL-5500 is for Win32 but you can download the Linux version at http://www.trolltech.com/developer/download/qtopia.html?cr=
The bad news is that this appears to work using Ethernet over USB and so you'll need to add this capability to your Linux system. There's some info on this at http://www.ruault.com/Zaurus/ethernet-over-usb-howto.html
