The battery icon on the "Home" screen has three states, full, half, and empty. The power control panel will also show the battery status. Something else must have happened to allow the battery to die without displaying the warning. I can only guess. Maybe the batteries are old, or you haven't used it for a long time, or there's some dirt or oxidization on the batteries, or you performed some operation that really taxed the batteries (the TasKlean add-in, for instance)...
