Message:I just got a REX 6000 to use with my Powerbook G3 and VirtualPC 4 with Win98. After a good bit of prepping, installing, setting up USB, resetting, reinstalling, I finally have the REX working using the USB cradle. It is slow and the Intellisync PIM is cumbersome, and somewhat flakey, but I have it all working.
Here is the interesting part; I quit out of VPC 4, then put the REX in the PCM slot on my Powerbook, and to my surprise an icon appeared on the Mac desktop labeled REX 6000 . When I double clicked it, a modem dialogue box opened. The Connect Via pop up lists showed three possible connections to choose, Modem Port, Internal Modem, and lo-and-behold REX 6000 . This made me think that there might be a way to use the REX directly on my Mac.
I called Xircom tech support and talked to Scott, who by the way he was very helpful and receptive. After a bit of conversation about the Powerbook discovery, he said it may be possible to use the REX serial cradle, which has a plug that will fit the Mac, and try Mac based sync and PIM software from Palm or other's and see if it will work. I should have the new cradle next week.
I did try Palm's 2.6.3 Desktop software for Mac with the REX in the PC slot, but even though the REX 6000 showed up on the Hotsync modem pop up, I could not find a way to run a sync operation. I may call Palm tomorrow. More to come.
