Thanks for the walkthrough. I finally managed to get the thing to sync only when I boot up with the REX already in the slot. Yes, it was in the slot before I tried to sync, yes the icon was running, and yes, my PCMCIA hardware knew it was there as a modem. Thanks again, and if it runs haywire again I'll look for you on Messenger.
