Unhappy Opera 5.14

Hmmm.

I may be visually impaired, but is Opera 5.14 really 256 colours ?
If not, why not, and when might they deign to fix this flaw.

There are plenty of other flaws, especially the certificates handling which seems to be broken/missing as well.

I had hoped that a v6 version would be forthcoming but suspect that Opera have thrown in the towel with EPOC Opera.

Any facts out there ?

Dweeb.

I'm afraid you have it correct - Opera 5.14 uses only 256 colours For a complete list of bugs in Opera, check my FAQ at the URL in my sig.

Sadly, I share your fear that Opera will not put out a new version for EPOC. Ah well, we comfort ourselves with the knowledge that at least they released a version at all - Psion's own Web browser is far far worse!

I raised these points on the new Opera support forums and a kind gentleman or gentlewoman by the name of JB Sigurjonsdottir confirmed that Opera has yet to make a decision on the continued support/development of Opera for the ER5 Symbian platform.

I did forward a list of the current annoying bugs (nicked from Yan's fine web site) and they confirmed these would be passed onto the lead developer. This was around the end of September and no Opera 6 yet but if we all start raising issues/problems we have with v5.14 on their shiny new Support Forum then I am sure the more they get, the more they may consider providing us with an updated release.

We can but hope.

Regards

Si

Si, would you care to post the URL for the Opera support forum please?

Thanks

No Probs Julie,

http://my.opera.com/forums/

The Opera support forum is part of the MyOpera area. You will need to register as per any forum and membership is free. From this linked page select the Opera for Symbian OS link. As you will see, it is not as popular as PDAStreet.com !!

Thanks Si, I've signed up. I think you are right - we need to make our collective presence felt over there!

Anyone else?

Julie

Having worked in a support deaprtment in the past, I hope lots of people will start posting on the Opera forums. While much of development is directed by future business (which we offer precious little), part of it still driven by the good old fashioned squeaky wheel: The more the support group nags and complains to the developers about the problems they are seeing reported, the more more motivated the developers are.

And yes, I am putting my time where my mouth is. I am posting on the Opera forums under the 'nym beljam. Come join in the discussion.

I'm there

Apparently they are aware of our problems and requests for bug fixes but we are not on the immediate priority list. Oh well, keeping that section of their forums active might help convince them that there is a reason to, at least, fix the bugs.

I've noticed that Opera's memory leaks really kick in with certain sites that rely heavily on frames.

Opera 5.13 to 5.14: problem

Upon upgrading to the new OS I went from a registered version of Opera 5.13 to 5.14 and promptly lost secure access to my bank account. Whereas there was no problem at all with 5.13, all I get with 5.14 is a blank screen. Can anyone suggest any settings that can be tweaked?

If you would care to look at the site it's www.rabobank.nl When that comes up, to get access to my account I then click on "Betalen & Sparen" which is on the left hand side of the screen next to one of the little keys symbols. That should produce a log-on screen; now all I get is a new window with a blank screen.

To be sure, I could re-install 5.13. But I would like to think that there is a setting in 5.14 that could fix this. I am sure you will agree that this is quite strange.

Thanks in advance.

Global

this is useful additional information Global.

It is known that Opera 5.14 does not support self-signed certificates - this is the problem you are getting and there is no fix.

What I didn't realise however was that they used to work in 5.13!

If you are prepared to do so, please join the support forums at my.opera.com/forums and register this as a fault.

Global, if you could try installing 5.13 again, this would be of great help to us, as there is another thread regarding this issue too.

Yan (or other mods), do you think this thread might be better off in the Software & Games for Psion & Symbian area as anyone with Opera 5.14 may suffer this same problem with certs.

Yes, I can re-install 5.13, presumably to the D (cf) drive. But should I worry about having two versions of the same program on the machine? And in the installation is there anything I should do to make sure that they don't corrupt one another?
