We seem to be hearing of a number of problems in getting 7Book/GPRS cellphone connections working, so the question is - has anyone had success with this?

Please note that this question is specific to 7Books, not "born-and-bred" netBooks. Trying to find out if there is some particular quirk of the 7Book that is causing a problem.

Thanks everyone.

Worked fine for me with an Ericsson T39m (also tested with a T68i), but no luck with a Panasonic GD87.

Thanks for the info, JJ - I take it that's with Vodafone?

Yes, it is. Do you mean there are other networks now? ;) I hadn't noticed them... :D

Any chance of seeing your settings for this ?

I am trying to get my 7book working with orange and a 6310i and having some problems. Any help welcomed

There aren't really any settings.

I've just created a modem called GPRS that uses IR at 115200 baud and an initialisation string of ATZ.

Then an Internet Connection called GPRS with a dial up number of *99# and an username of web and password web.

All the other setting is done on the phone under Settings->GPRS Modem Settings->Edit Active Access Point->GPRS accoss point, which is set to internet

And that's it. You do need to check that your vodafone account is set up for full internet access rather than wap only access. I am able to download emails and access web pages with no problem. I haven't tried sending an email yet, but assume it won't work due to authentication issues and that I'll have to switch back to GSM and dial my ISP for this. I'll try it when I get a chance and let you know.

If you use the SMTP server smtp.vizzavi.co.uk then sending emails will work fine over Vodafone GPRS.

I want to use my blueyonder and lineone accounts, and I know these don't work with each other so assume they won't with vodafone.

Thanks Nick and JJ - at least we know now that a GPRS connection can be successful with a 7Book, so I guess it's back to troubleshooting individual problems!

They will work - what you need to do in the settings page is use your ISP's POP3 server and Vodafone's SMTP server (smtp.vizzavi.co.uk). In the 'Email address' box you can still use the address given to you by your ISP - so even though you're sending mail through smtp.vizzavi.co.uk, the From: address of the emails will be your proper name@blueyonder.co.uk address.

Give it a go and let me know if you have any problems.

Cheers,
