Well, after ordering my Axim on Dec 26th and MUCH anticipation I was notified today that the shipping date was pushed back to February. I just can't understand how a major company like Dell could release a product to the public and miscalculate supply/demand so badly.
I understand it's a great value and that's why I originally wanted it. But, with my luck, I will fiinally get it and several months later they will release the new Axim with built in WiFi for the same price.
I guess the bottom line is that I just refuse to be held hostage by this company. Any company that makes customers wait 20 minutes on the phone to talk to a human or a month and a half to receive (non custom) products that have been paid for in full does not deserve my business. If they hadn't misled me and givin me an unrealistic delivery date I probably wouldn't be so bitter. Unfortunately for them they lost a customer for life.
I paid for a product or service and want it as soon as possible to receive that "instant gratification"
This is just not American I tell ya !!! :-)
Anyone who has one enjoy it. I'm getting a new Jornada from the retail store down the street.

ordered my 400Hz Axim online on the jan-04, came by UPS ground delivery on jan-08. Love it.
...Although I do understand all the people bitching about the Tech Support / Customer Service. The one and only time I called, I was on hold for an hour and they they wanted to transfer me. I figured it out by myself.

Went to the local store and got a Toshiba Pocket PC e740 with Wi-Fi 802.11b WLAN. Paid $379 plus tax after $100 rebate. After all was said and done, I actually paid for it and GET THIS brought it home immediately. No waiting, no false promises. Only differences 32M Rom but by the time I need more for a new OS I'll be buying new anyway and no CF, but I was going to use this fullt ime for WiFi anyways.
Have fun with the Axim's. They seem to be sweet little machines if/when you can get them
Later
I've heard that they ship out the 400s very fast, but the 300s for everyone takes a month. I don't understand why since the 300s seem to be just as in demand as the 400s. I just ordered my 300 and the estimated date is the 5th of next month, so...I have a long wait. Of course, I want it now now now...if only I could get the rebates that they offer online at the stores. :p

not really, considering the 300 is a 100 bucks cheaper, I'm sure more people are going for that, since it cost as much as a palm. also it seems like dell is still trying to carry out the december orders for the 300s which I would imagine had a very high volume of orders for xmas.
I guess. I am still waiting for my confirmation email, and I might want to cancel the order if the expected delivery date is too long for my liking, and just spring for the 400.

lets see $400 vs. $300, yup the Dell is still the best deal around.

To think yours is bad. Mine is the worst. After surfing this web site, I got to know alots of ppl are buying. I also would like to get one too, since the price is reasonable for a PDA. So I accessed Dell web under Asia (cos I am from Asia country). Who knows, they don't have the PDA on-line for ppl to order. I have sent them an email to enquiry for this product. Till now, no one has bothered to reply back to me. Very disappointing!!! :(
After that, I went to Dell US instead. Even more frustrating, the offer doesn't open to foreigners like us. Talking about products manufacturing at Asia countries!!!!
It's really very hurting!!! So I decided to dropout this PDA. Anyone care to advise me which better PDA to replace Axim???? In term of quality & value.

Well, $400 may seem like a lot to some (especialy students)compared to the $300, but the Toshiba came with BUILT IN WiFi. No card to buy, worry about etc... also fewer bugs and kinks to work out with an established product line. Throw in the time I've been waiting and would still be waiting for it (opportunity cost)...and there you have it. Decision made!
I don't know about your time, but mine is valuable. I also don't like to get jerked around with bad customer support and broken promises by the manufacturer of a product I spend hundreds of dollard for.
If you ask me it was worth cancelling my order for the Axim and going with the Toshiba. Don't take it personally all of you Dell supporters. Some of you act as if you own the company. Chill :-)
I liked the idea of the Axim...but it just wasn't for me.

I was thinking of getting the Toshiba also, but after hearing so many complaints about the pda (Wifi very slow, sucks battery life) heating problems, memory loss. it seems that 50% of them are excellent and the other 50% are overpriced paper weights, hope you didn't get one of the deffective ones, because i've heard toshiba has really bad customer support, just like dell.

If you do find a problem with the e740, can you post what your problem is, i'm still interested in getting one of these.

my biggest gripe bout the e740 is the uneven lighting on the screen and high battery consumption from the wi fi. Also if you're a student and in it for the wi-fi, I should mention that 90% of college compuses use wi-fi with LEAP authentication, which only cisco makes, which aren't available in cf form. which is the problem I'm facing now. I could've gone and gotten an ipaq (/w pcmcia expansion) but that woulda costed me about $400 more just to use wifi so I'm just wanna wait till I get my laptop later this year.

Luckily I've been out of school for years now. I only wish they had this technology back then :-( I use my pda at work...that's where I utilize my WiFi. I do use a PDA out and about town for other things but not WiFi. I did call one of our IT guys last night before buying (friend of mine) to make sure it would be compatible at work. Took it to see him this am and we fired it up and accessed no problem. My Toshiba looks great so far... as far as battery life I'll have to wait and see.
I use my laptop on wireless network at home. I prefer the bigger screen and more power. I'm only using the PDA at the house for sync ing for emails and spreadsheets I've made during the day and dwnlding daily web pages etc....
Looks as if this is going to work out well for me as long as no unexpected problems pop up with the Toshiba.
Wish me luck

buccscott,
i hope you enjoy your new toy
as much as i would love to cut-up your choice i just can't. i ordered it dec 24th and recieved it jan 3. the following week i had to get a replacement because the unit would not sync with my computer at work. the second unit that i have, the windows media player freezes about every 10 songs.
customer service sucks ordered second cradle and adaptor it took two weeks and the only reason i got a response was by sending an e-mail to the service rep's supervisor and leaving my cell #.
i also sent my casio e-125 back to be repaired because i just don't have faith in first gen stuff (i should have known better). perhaps in a few months you will sit back and laugh at us ax owners...,
or
perhaps you'll be kicking yourself for not being more patient (yes patience has its limits)
either way good luck, bon chance
p.s. with all the probs with the ax i still am having fun and will not trade it for anything..., except a newer version.

Thanks Chuck... I would have liked to at least check the Axim out, but alas you are correct in the assumption that patience has it's limits.
Enjoy your Axim my friend!
