Hello,

I'm a long time user of avantgo with my Palm III, but received a new Clié for Christmas. My question is about cradle access to the web. With the old system I used to be able to connect to the PC and the web via avantgo plus a nice little piece of software called mochaw32ppp. This way if there was some particular piece of news which I wanted to dig deeper into, I could start mocha and through avantgo browsing download deeper links or pictures with a "live" connection, and then take it on the go to read it later.

As you all know, the new OS 5 did not work with avantgo until now with the new beta version. I had been waiting eagerly for this, but now find I still cannot do what I used to. The problem seems to be the USB connection (the palm used to be serial). Mocha cannot see the USB and at their site they say they have no USB upgrade plans. So when I tell avantgo to connect, even if I have the settings set to "cradle" it never finds anything to connect to.

So my question is how can I continue to connect through the cradle to the internet "live". I tried netfront and mobipocket with no luck. I dont want to invest in one of those "network cards" (for the clié) if they only work as a cellular call, I want to be able to connect through the cradle like I used to.

Thanks for any help.

Well,
Does anybody know how to assign a comm port number to a USB port?

i think u may be able to set up RAS on your machine to allow your Palm to connect through PPP and "passthrough" to the Internet.

MochaPPP made it easy for you. If that is not working, you can try doing it manually. Not sure what OS you have but these instructions are for NT boxes...

You can also try searching on Google for: "palm internet cradle ppp"

good luck!

Thanks for the answer!. However, I get as far as trying to add a new service. Remote access service is not on the list!. I'm using w98.

Well, there is no way to do this (yet, I figure sooner or later someone will write the code to allow this) through USB.

Here is what worked :

1. Purchase a serial hotsync cable for your device from somewhere such as pcables.com (If you don't have a USB device to start with then these instructions should work for you with your device as is! , However, it is important that your device has a web browser installed, such as netfront or Avantgo.)

2. Download Pilotnet, or Palm redirect (freeware)

3. Tell Pilotnet what comm port the modem is.

4. Tell Pilotnet what comm port the Palm is connected to.

5. Configure the Palm under System/Prefs/connection/new:

Connect to: Modem
Via: Cradle/Cable
Dialing: Touchtone
Volume: Low

Details...
Speed 57600 bps
Flow Ctl: Automatic

Under System/Prefs/network:

Service: Your normal ISP
User Name: Your user name
Password: Your password
Connection: The name you gave to the new connection created above (possibly "custom" if you did not enter a name)
Phone: Your ISP phone number
Details...
Connection type:PPP
Idle timeout: never
Query DSN: checked
IP address: Automatic (checked)
Script...
End:

That worked for me.I could not get it to work with mocha w32 PPP nor direct cable connection as I used to with my old Palm IIIx, but I get the same effect.

I found the nice piece of software I was waiting for. It does what mocha used to do, but through the USB connection. It's called Softick PPP.
Works like a charm.
