Hi there,

I got my Tungsten today, and I must say it comes with some advantages compared to Windows CE devices. The sleek design and intuitive communication interface are among the really nice features.

However, it has also got some disadvantages -- mainly in the way of handling office documents. So far, I've only tested the included 'Documents To Go' package, but from what I've read about other office suites they all seem to lack the ability to save files in any other format than their native one, or as PalmOS Doc format.

Is there any set of office applications for Palm that may save files in RTF-format, desktop standard formats (like .doc and .xls) or as plain text?

I'd like to be able to e-mail my documents, but with the limitations in 'Documents To Go' that doesn't seem to be possible.

Do you want to email them from your palm or from the desktop?

Sorry -- from my Palm device. I'm used to it since my Pocket PC days.

With i.e. Pocket Word (Windows CE) one can save a file in different Word formats, as well as in RTF format or as plain text.

I understand if licenses and stuff prevent PalmOS applications to save in Microsoft Office native formats, but I really don't see why a document can't be saved in RTF format or as plain text?

I begin to think I'm missing something here. One can't actually be expected to hit the road for more than a few hours, without the possible need of e-mailing an document, right?

I bought my TT mainly to receive email attachements in the MS Word profile. I wanted to be ready to get these files in any hotel at any time. I wanted to edit the attachements and send them back via bluetooth and mobile phone.

This turned out not to be possible at the moment. Can I say more. Documents to go (that I like the most) should eventually do their job to conquer the PPC competitors.

This is a drawback of the Palm Platform. And Palm should know that. A PPC would do that.

Have a nice night.

Yeah, I've seen it, but I didn't react when there was nothing about saving to different file formats -- such a feature is mandatory to me, and nothing that belong in a comparasion chart.

I actually thought the PalmOS and applications were high-end, but as for 'Documents To Go' the WYSIWYG is the only advantage over the Windows CE / Pocket PC 'Pocket Office'.

Maybe there is a reason for Microsoft to be what they are, after all...

It's a drawback, allright...

I'll have to go back to my Jornada 720 for documents, and use my Tungsten only for the PIM features.

It feels kind of awkward. I'm walking around with a $499 calendar in my pocket...

Until I can persuade my IT department to buy me a small form factor Pocket PC to carry around, that is...

Well...

As proved so often before, one maybe should look deeper into things before barking... :D

As fas as I can tell, Dataviz' 'Inbox To Go' has the ability to send office documents.

I'm happy again...
