I know this will be biased but I still need an answer. Do you guys suggest getting the dell or the toshiba, money isn't really a problem for the toshiba cuz I can get the toshiba for 250 right now. Thanks :)

The E740 has known screen back light problems, thus the reason the prices are coming down. The built-in WiFi has known battery usage issues as well.

The benefit of getting the Axim is you can remove the Wifi card when not in use saving precious battery. Also, I have noticed the battery on the Axim to be very strong.

For the money I would pay the extra 50 plus a CF WIFI and get the axim. If you just want to get the Toshiba anyway, take a good look at it before buying. Unclear lighting on screens will mess with your work sometimes.

If I am not mistaken, the Toshiba has a power switch that turns the wireless lan card off when it is not being used.

Money was not really an issue with me either...I guess I'm Brand loyal since my last 4 laptops have been Dell's....Also, I've always had GOOD! experiences with Dell's Tech support...for the most part, that is.....I have a friend...20+ yrs computers...that bought the e740 and when I showed him my Axim 400 he was impressed at how much better it felt...Operationally, they are not any different....The only real advantage is the built in WiFi and I can get a CF Card WiFi for $50 to $75...If you don' t plan on using WiFi then it's not even an issue...go with the cheaper unit...he has a 2.4 and 5ghz network in his house(2 story) and has not been able to or maybe just hasn't had the time, to get it to communicate...he has other WiFi devices up but not the 740 yet....being 2 story, he has had communication problems with some of the other WiFi's....I also found out something about the Axim recently that I was not happy about....I have 300 CF Card and 64 SD Card and I primarily wanted to use them to store my everdy files. Everytime I sync'd I notice that my files were not being added to the folder on my desktop...done some troubleshooting and realized that I had to phisically move or copy the files into Axim main memory for them to actually be duplicated in the desktop Axim folder and also my notes in Outlook wouldn't sync until I moved those to main memory....Maybe someone has a fix but I don't think having to move or copy my files to main memory just to have them sync properly is very effecient since I really wanted to utilize the big CF Cards I own for this purpose. Dell says, "the external slots are primarily for backing up your data." I only keep pictures or other files that aren't critical to sync on the external mem now....Oh yea...if you move the files back to the cards after sync'ng and then re-sync, the files are overwritten with blank folders...I don't konw the best way to attack this yet....maybe someone has posted a thread already...I'm new to the board..I will do some reasearch....

I have a Dell AXIM/400 and I like it. However, it does have a few flaws. Mainly the buttons are a little goofy. This is one of the major complaints from AXIM users. I considered the e740 but decided against it for three reasons.
1) Cost vs the AXIM. I don't need wireless.
2) Display
3) Problems with data loss. There was a recall for this issue for early production units. My sister had hers updated but still lost her data last week when the battery got low.
If money isn't an object I'd probably look at the IPacs too.

The CF option can be turned off on the Toshiba but with the use of MS Mess. or other online software like I use, when it is on, it is wireless. I can get mounts to my network drives and such.

As for the money issue, if you got it, get the 5450 HP. That is a nice package. The bluetooth is the big selling point for that one.

The primary selling point for me on the Dell was my experience over the lasty decade with their products and service. I am sure lots of people are having problems, but Dell generally will help you much more than the Hps, Compaqs and Toshiba's of the world.

Bluetooth is also on the iPAQ 3970, which costs a lot less than the 5450. The 5450 has the wireless lan and the fingerprint scanner built in. That is the main difference between the two models. Other than that, they are pretty much the same machine. they both use the same processor, have the same amount of memory, and the same great screen.

Does that mean I can't install a game on a CF or SD card, or are you just talking about stuff that needs to be updated according to what you've changed on your PC.

I have not seen the Toshiba e740, but had an e335 (I think it has the same hardware as the e330, just different software) for about a month. I do not know whether the e740 and 335/330 are similar, but read something that lead me to believe that, with the exception of the WiFi addition on the 740.

I found the 335 screen quality to suck worse than any other PDA I've seen. It was bright, but extremely washed out. Whites were white, but everything else was very pale. I found text editing fine, but pictures were horrible.

For what it's worth, I found the Compaq Ipaq 3835 (all the following were around $300 also, with rebates and sales) to be good, but had the opposite problem. The screen was extremely bluish, and all colors were oversaturated. Pictures and games were very dark, even with brightness on full (good luck with battery life using it like that, too).

Just to continue with what I've found in that price range, the Viewsonic V35 was a little smaller but just as nice as the Dell Axim, all around. The Compaq (HP?) 1910 had a very nicely lit and colored screen, but (I can't figure why) the text was all shadowy (if you've seen this on a desktop monitor, especially one with an extension video cable, you know what I mean).

Good luck with the purchase. If it makes you feel any better, just to put it into perspective, anything we all have or might get we will probably replace in less than 2 years anyway.
