Can anyone explain memory on the Dell Axim. I have
no experience with PDA's. My Axim is said to have
64mb memory. It is standard except for loading
Adobe Acrobat which used about 11mb. My purpose
was to download some manuals for reference. I've
downloaded 2 manuals so far, one was around 400 kb
the other was around 8,000 kb. Next I tried to
download a file size of around 9200 kb and I get
an error message that says I'm out of memory.

I understand that the loaded programs use up a
portion of the memory as overhead but my system
memory settings say that I have 11.71mb free of
storage and 28.82mb free of program memory.

Total main memory is 63.54mb.

Does the memory usage go up because of the way
Acrobat must format the pdf files into the format
needed to display on the PDA screen?

You said that when you loaded Acrobat, it took up 11 megs? What version of acrobat did you load? Pocket Acrobat, doesn't even take up that much, only like a 1 or 2 megs for the program, and then wahtever kind of PDF guides you put on there. If you are going to store a lot of PDF documents that are sizeable, I would get a CompactFlash Memory Card, or an SecureDigital/MMC card, and not use up all your Axim's internal memory.

Make sure when you load programs you load pocket versions of the program for ARM/Xscale processors, or PPC2002.

Thanks for the info. I loaded Acrobat Reader 1.0
for pocket pc mobile devices. The file size is
8.6mb. My mistake on 11mb.

I was thinking that I would need to get a mem
card. Do you prefer one over the other.

Thanks again for the answer.

Are you talking about the download file size, or the size of the program on the Axim? My program on the Axim, only takes up a meg or two. I have an SD card for my MP3's, but from what I hear CF memory cards are a bunch faster.

To talk about the CF versus SD is a whole new conversation. I use both and the SD seems faster and less memory instensive than the 4X CF card.

Good Luck with the memory issue. Looks like you got the answers.

Yep, you're right. The more I goof around with this
thing, the more I find. The file size is small for
Acrobat. Since then I bought an additional mem
card.

Thanks for your help.
