I would just buy the Bluetooth USB card to save some time. lucyindie 01-23-2003, 11:36 PM Well for financial reasons really. Was thiking of internet sharing options between my desktop downstairs and my laptop upstairs. Instead of buying a wi-fi hub, an ordinary hub was thinking of the possibility of a bluetooth network because when I leave this place in a few months i want something i can use after that, and i cant bring along the hubs:) nightwing 01-24-2003, 12:49 AM if i might suggest....wirless LAN? you can either buy Access Points (802.11b) and a couple of wireless adapters and network the entire thing (including T|T, if theres a 11b card available here already). or...just buy two 11b cards and run them in adhoc mode, assuming your PC and laptop are in range, you should be able to do what you want. hope this helps... lucyindie 01-27-2003, 01:03 AM Please expound on this adhoc mode:) Thought of the wi-fi option but its going to cost much:) Know any cheap setup?:) mmmkay 01-27-2003, 01:52 AM Adhoc is kind of like having 2 network cards and a cross over cable instead of a hub. nightwing 01-27-2003, 02:45 AM ...like what mmmkay said. problem with this adhoc thing though, if you want more than 2 devices on the WLAN, you'd need the access point (hub) ...not sure what the prices are these days, (somebody correct if i'm wrong), you can get an Access Point with one WiFi card for $100. the access point would of course be bulk of the cost so assuming its about $20-30. barring ISA and PCMCIA price diffs, $60 all in all...? lucyindie 01-28-2003, 07:50 AM nightwing: are you talking prices in the philippines or US (It says u are from marikina) Last I checked a wireless lan hub is around 14k pesos If the $100 thing is available in the Phil, let me know:) nightwing 01-28-2003, 08:47 AM truth is...i havent checked out the local prices. i remember somebody mentioned it a couple of years ago...i know it isnt a Cisco AP (about $800 list). maybe D-Link? i know of people who have some, will ask around... nightwing 01-28-2003, 11:22 PM lucyindie, your right, local price at Mobile 1: Linksys AP - P14,750 (PCX i think is that P12k) Linksys PCMCIA - P7,380 my friend bought his from US Linksys access point was $89.99 after rebate. card was $29 after rebate. so if you have friends in the US, i suggest you have them buy for you :) lucyindie 01-29-2003, 08:12 AM Haaaay, The irony of it all, poor country gets the expensicve prices haha. Thats one big pricfe difference. Will consider that option. AS for now, am settling for wiring my house haha. How far does WIFI go? How many meters and will it cover a whole 2 story house? hmmmm I wonder why blue tooth isnt getting the same treatment? Bluetooth networks? mmmkay 01-29-2003, 04:01 PM BT has a 10 meter range, unless you get Class 1 equipment then you have a 100 meter range as a result of increased power output. The reason BT is not used for home networks is because it is extremely slow compared to wifi :-) Top speed is like 1Mbps.. the new 802.11g and 802.11a are 54Mbps, while the original 802.11b is 11Mbps, while some 802.11b equipment claim a 22Mbps with compatible equipment. You might say.. 1Mbps is fine for me.. I'm only writing email or whatever, but consider that the BT adapters cost more or equal to wifi adapters, and that once you get more than two computers on the network, things are probably going to be slowing down exponentially :-) BT just wasn't meant for home networks with broadband connections. It's great for connecting your phone or your Tungsten to a local computer though. nightwing 01-29-2003, 07:36 PM WiFi ranges are dependent on several things...power, antenna type, cable lengths. with the proper equipment, you could even have wireless equipment range up to 6miles...provided there's proper line of sight, etc. but just for the usual WiFi access point with the rubber ducky antenna (forgive me, i think this is a cisco term...i dont know the general term for it), 100 meters wont be a problem...assuming the antennas can bleed off of your floors/ceilings and walls. (in addition to what mmmkay said), vendors who claim 22 mbps on 802.11b say that they can do nonblocking on 11b protocols...or full duplex (11mbps bidirectional = 22mbps effectively). so in effect they're saying they have their equipment on switching platforms which i'm not sure they've proven yet as wifi equipment are for the most part, just hubs. lucyindie 01-30-2003, 12:20 PM Whats this 2 gHZ wi-fi hubs i see in mall stalls these days? mmmkay 01-30-2003, 02:48 PM 802.11g and 802.11b run on 2.4GHz unlicensed spectrum or something like that :-) 802.11a is around 5GHz I think (hence reduced range). nightwing 01-31-2003, 10:57 AM just an interesting comment on the 'unlicensed spectrum'...of all the countries i know, only philippines has licensed the 2.4ghz spectrum. we cant use wifi 802.11b outdoors :0) weird... lucyindie 01-31-2003, 12:01 PM This may be off topic, but since there a quite a lot of pinoys in this thread, and this forum seems to be my one stop shop for queries, can i ask: Does anyone here use PLDT mydsl and network it via a hub? If so, will it work, or does PLDT prohibit it? nightwing 02-02-2003, 07:18 AM been wanting to get pldt's dsl...but havent gotten around to it. supposedly you could, try getting pldt to give you more than one IP address :) lucyindie 02-03-2003, 12:15 AM I just emailed them! They say you can only use more than one pc if you have a busines subscription. That is another selfish act by pldt. I guess they still have the remnants of their monopolistic ways. PDA Street
