Wondering if anyone has played around with the new "wireless G" access points? Its suppose to be backwards compatible with the 802.11B standard. I got the Dell wi-fi card in my Axim, but im not sure if I should stick with the 802.11B standard AP or wait and go with the .11G new standard? The reviews right now say that the backwards compatibility isn't so backwards yet, but the promises in firmware should correct that. Anyone? Thanks:confused:

"G" is backwards compatible because it maintains the 2.4 GHz frequency used by "B". "A" uses the 5GHz frequency.
"G" offers transmission speeds of up to 54 Mbps and "B" offers speeds up to 11 Mbps. However, as far as which one to choose... I would stick with "B".
"G" is such new technology, it has a long way to go before wide acceptance.
FYI: The new MACs are coming out with built in "G"

Chriz, Great info. Since "G" is backwards compatable, wouldn't it be a smart investment. Why wait till every one else jumps on the wagon? I would take into consideration the price more heavily. Bu as stated "B" is WIDELY available and secure.

It is all a function of how much money you want to spend to get 54MB (actually about 11 after you factor in shorter range, WEP and spread spectrun problems in most households...).
The routers/APs are generally comparably prices but the cards...are still a bit pricey. I can build an entire 22MB or 11MB wireless setup for two PCs for under $200 where that will only get you one or two pieces of low quality 11.G netowrk hardware.
Let the technology get even with the prices and you will be better served. I went out and bought enough stuff to get my entire house wireless two years ago and spent five times more than what I would have only a year later...

Thanks for all the input, I have done my homework and I have a pretty good feel for all the specs. What I was really looking for was if anyone has actually used the 54G standard? Thanks

I have been holding out for G also. So far I have not found a supplier for CF in "G"
If you know of one let me know.

CFs are still in their infancy for wireless. They are still perfecting the 11.A and 11.B when it comes to power burn rates and transmit ranges as compared to PCI/USB/PCM cards.
Also, throughput for a CF slot is less that 10MB usually bursts only to 2 - 3 MB so anything faster is a waste.

Thank you: I don't / won't have to spend more money that 11-B
on the hand held front.
May get a G Router for other machines on the network.

I'm using the Linksys WRT54G router and everything seems pretty nice with it so far. I don't have a G series card for the PC yet, just the B so it's only doing as much as the card can handle.
I'm pretty satisfied with it so far.
