Does anyone know or heard any rumours if there are any plans by Psion to release updated Netbook hardware? I'm thinking of adding things like USB support, improved screen, built-in bluetooth, faster IR, and so on. I'm very tempted to get a netbook to replace my Series 7 (so old I don't think the Expansys upgrade would work) but don't want to spend all that just to find a new model is then available. I can make do with my 7, but you know what it's like ;) .
Hmm, not in any kind of short term (i.e. not this year!)
There is a 'new' netBook out, but this simply has a new motherboard layout so as to improve the current supply to the PC and CF card slots, no new features.
Given the (eventual) success of netBook, plus the involvement of a proven industrial hardware manufacturer (Teklogix), I can certainly see Psion developing 'netBook 2', but heaven only knows what the spec will be, or when it'll see the light of day.

It's at least a relief to hear that you think the Netbook form will survive. I was concerned also that the Netpad would be the only new hardware and , nice as it is, I can't see it being the workhorse that the 7 is at the moment.

I have not heard any rumours about a new, enhanced device and with their current financial position I cannot see Psion suddenly launching an enhanced device at the moment. I would advise you just to go ahead and get a netBook now and enjoy it for what it is rather than worrying that it will be replaced by a newer model shortly.
Fortunately Psion are not like Sony who have released something like 8 new Palm-based devices this year so far!!! They have an average obsolecence rate of around 2 months for each device since one is phased out when a new one is added to the range.

Hi
Does anyone (Yan?) know how to tell (or where to ask) if a netBook is one of the new type?

Are you trying to make us all drool, Nick? If so, you're succeeding!

Sorry no.
Phone Psion support and ask them? Or obtain a guarantee from your vendor that if the machine bought does not work with a card that the new design should support (such as the Option GPRS CF card), that you can have it exchanged for a more recent model.

Just a few basic things that I think ought to be standard these days. They're all built-in to my Ipaq, just a pity about the form-factor and flakiness of it. I've ended up going back to the Palm m515 when I want portability.
So I guess SyncML over bluetooth would be another thing on the wishlist
