From PMN newsletter:

"05 September 2002 -- Psion has announced an updated version of its netBook sub-notebook device for enterprise markets. The netBook uses the Symbian OS and provides a near full-size keyboard, colour screen and a full suite of PIM, productivity and communications applications.
The latest edition has an enhanced version of the Symbian OS and supports GPRS and ISDN PC cards. Psion has improved support for all types of fixed and wireless networking and added the latest version of the Opera secure web browser. Psion no longer manufactures consumer handhelds, but the popularity of the netBook in enterprise markets has ensured its continued production."

Actually it seems to be bussinesslanguage for we have the new version 158 of EPOC/Symbian sort of ready.

Its not a new machine.

Well I was wrong it is indeed updated hardware.

According to the ISDN Userguide for the new OS version:

"Psion Teklogix are constantly looking at improvements to netBook and from September 2002 have updated
the PCB on all netBook products. This enhancement increases the power to the PC Card slot and allows
users to benefit from both ISDN and GPRS connectivity via the PC Card slot. Owners of netBook and/or
Series 7 machines manufactured prior to September 2002 will not be able to take advantage of ISDN or
GPRS connectivity via the PC Card slot. If you are unsure as to which version of netBook you have, we
suggest you "

Sorry

And what about some kind of "motherboard replacement service" for current netbook users ??? It would be nice from Psionteklogix...

That sounds as if it might be expensive!

Well, may be not as expensive as the loss when intending to buy a new netbook and selling the old one if you would like to use the new features... And if this service is made available through authorised service partners around the world, high postage rates will not apply...

Well, I'm sure that's true. It will be very interesting to see whether it transpires - I think it's another one where I'm not going to be holding my breath. ;) I don't want to get Harvey worried again! ;)

Still, if not, it would be a good excuse - sorry, "reason" - to get a brand new machine!

pro2type - what was the rest of that quote? It was about to tell us how to differentiate the new netBook from the old - something that people about to purchase will dearly want to know!

All....Julie is right, to upgrade the hardware on previous netBooks would be an expensive option. It is not a simple modification that could be done at board level. The PCB would need to be replaced.

Then cost we would need to charge for this service would be in the region of £400-£500.

Obviously, if we saw a market demand for this, I would reconsider offering an upgrade service;

Hi Harvey

I recently (about a fortnight ago) had one of my netBooks repaired (damaged CF pins) and so they obviously changed at least the CF connector, maybe the part of the board it sits on. Is there any way to identify whether it has the new motherboard?

What serial numbers do the new ones start from? I really want to get that Option card working

thanks

Since the (alleged) new motherboard supplies more current to the PCMCIA card slot I am wondering if older ones can be modded. This might even be as simple as running an additional wire from the battery to the slot (which would probably be do-able at home) - so the question is 'what is the weakest link in the power supply chain?'

Any ideas/ info?

All

Please see the following response from the electronics engineer responsible for the PCB modification:

"The PCMCIA voltage regulator circuit in the original netbook is rated at about 350mA. This circuit can not be modified to provide any more current. On the new pcb the circuit has been replaced with a completely different regulator(the two regulators are not compatible). "

I am sure we could achieve the same results with a paper clip and some sellotape !!! That being a big plume of black smoke and the desperate need for a new Netbook !!!

Mind you, if I was Harvey, I would be actively encouraging this type of Netbook bashing as the increased sales figures for new Netbooks might even convince Psion to get back into the private market again!! lol

Oh....them were the days !!

Harvey,
don't you think that our loyalty should deserve a more competitive upgrade service?
think of all the world of mouth we are providing to the nB
;-)

Hi Harvey

I bought one of those Globetrotter cards and have rung Psion & Teklogix four times trying to see if someone understands the issue (one person did - nice guy but didn't come back to me) - sometimes on the premium line.

Everyone has promised to tell me when they will be available, or what serial number they start from. We want to use these things at work and I just want to buy or order one.

Do you know when anyone will have an answer as to where & when?

Sorry to hassle.

Thanks for supporting this forum
