Just got my new m500 with the usb cradle. It only came with the usb cable, no ac adaptor cable came with the unit. Do I need this to run the cradle?

If you got the m500, I think that the AC adapter was supposed to come with it. Without it, you cannot power your device.

When you first get a Palm with a rechargeable battery like the m500, I think it is required to charge for some time. I assume that you haven't done this because you don't have the adapter.

You can sync with the cradle even if it doesn't have the adapter plugged in. However, the device will not charge.

I have two cradles for my M500 and neither one has a power cord they get power through the USB port. You can tell if it is getting power by rather or not it is charging.

Interesting. I didn't know USB powered devices like FireWire did. I think that the m130 is different. It needs the adapter.

All I know is that I plug into my USB port and it all works.

A USB port puts out 5V, 500mA - plenty to charge a Palm. I am surprised that they bothered to connect the power pin in the USB plug to the power pin in the Universal Connector.

Of course, if you plug into an unpowered 4:1 USB hub, that 500mA will be shared by up to 3 other devices. It might take forever to charge your Palm.

The AC adapter puts out 1000mA - all to the Palm. Plenty for a reliable, fast charge. All Palms should come with an AC adapter.

BTW, FireWire puts out 2400mA!
