I fell victim to the TV shopping channel and ordered a package deal:
With the Palm IIIC, you get the portable keyboard, a Palm leather carrying case (snap-on) and a PDA power training CD-ROM! Plus, it features a color screen! Also includes:
Palm OS Software V3.5
Air/Auto power adapter-input 12volts DC power, charge your Palm IIIC while on the road, use in a car or airplane, fits a standard DC outlet or cigarette lighter, small and light, includes custom travel bag
Hotsync cradle and battery re-charger-synchronize all your information with your desktop PC at a touch of a button
Getting started and handbook information
9- to 25-Pin adapter
Modem connectivity kit-you can use third party email and internet messaging applications to send and receive messages between your handheld palm and you internet service provider. (includes modem, CD-Rom, 2 AAA batteries, and 10' phone cord)

This was $264 with shipping--was this a good deal?
Or a bad one?

I have never used a PDA so not sure what I am in for. I would plan to use it for my genealogy, address book, date reminder, and note taker when I'm at the library/cemetery. Also, a couple of games: solitaire/scrabble.

Is this doable with the IIIc?

The prospect of not being able to add memory concerns me. Is there ANY way to upgrade?

Any feedback/thoughts on this is appreciated!

Let me get this clearly, a IIIc, a keyboard, a case, a car ac adaptor and a modem. That's not bad for the money. As for the applications you plan to use the machine for, a IIIc will handle them easily. As for the memory, there is an external module available called the Memory Safe from Northstar Systems but, realistically, 8mb should be plenty of space for what you have in mind. My IIIc and my Vx have that much ram and I do a lot more with it than that.

Yeah, it sounds like an ok deal.

8mb should be alright for what you described unless you plan to lug around lots of books and pictures, and downloading web pages.

Just in case you are in danger of running out, get a MemorySafe module with additional 8mb from Northstar. For greater functionality like reading books directly from the module, get a FlashCmdMS from JKS.

I think you will be very happy with the IIIc. For what you want to do, it will be great. I have a IIIxe (same as your IIIc, but without the color screen) and I run QuickOffice (allows you to use Excel and Word spreadsheets) and I have downloaded the entire Bible. I still have plenty of the 8mb of memory left. As for the deal you got, I recently purchased my wife a used IIIc off ebay for about $150 and I didn't get any of the accessories you got. So for an extra $100, you received a warranty and the accessories - you be the judge.

you didn't get a good deal, you got a feakin' steal. when i bought mine i paid $350.00, and all i got was a cradle and charger.

you will love your new iiic, as i always have. look for software here, at cnet.com & palmgear.com. this is just scraching the surface of what is out there.

have fun,

Not much to add to the previous comments, but the IIIc is one of the most reliable "traditional" Palms available. I've had mine for 6 months and got a similar deal/steal on ebay. The keyboard's great for extensive data entry, and the Memory Safe module mentioned by a couple of others is a definite worthwhile investment. I run two myself: one for document storage and the other for a portable system backup.

Congrats, and welcome to the very satisfied world of IIIc owners!
