I was given a Palm IIIxe without any accompanying software or hardware. From what I can tell, I could order some sort of adaptor to connect to my desktop to download information from there to the Palm, such as my address book, and I can download the software to put on my desktop so that this can be done. Is this true, and is this all I need to get this going, or am I better off buying a whole new one?

TIA for any advice.

Yep, it's true:

Get the software at:

http://www.palm.com/software/desktop/

and a cable at:

http://www.gtwaccessories.com/cgi-bin/pagegen/gtwaccessories/www/page.html?mode=itempage&file=/page/itempagev4/itempage.spl&prodid=1816408

for 17.95. You might even find them cheaper elsewhere, but either way its cheaper than buying a new PDA.

Search eBay for "Palm III cradle" you should be able to get one for less than $10

You can also find the IIIxe manual (in PDF) here: http://www.palm.com/support/handbooks/palm3.pdf
