I'm considering getting the value Axim ( the $250 jobbie ). Will it do what I need ?
I want to do the following :
0. Keep an appointment calendar ( sync with Outlook on desktop )
1. Keep a modest # of names/addresses ( sync with Outlook on desktop )
2. Keep a todo task list sorted by by priority and task type ( sync with Outlook on desktop )
3. Make periodic journal entries, ie. spoke to joe decided xyz
4. Keep a mileage log in Pocket Excel and a few other small spreadsheets ( sync with files on desktop ).
5. Keep an assortment of notes.
6. Sync up all of the above with a desk top PC
7. Play Monopoly.
I am not worried about multimedia type things, wifi etc.
Will the value model be sufficent ?
Will I need to purchase any additional memory units to run Excel etc. ?
I don't think I'd be working the thing to hard.
Comments from those who use this unit are appreciated.

I have the 300 mHz Axim, and do some of hte mulitmedia, and have no problem whatsoever. I use it for generally the same things as you, and have had no complaints.

I bought the 400 mhz model because when you add the price of a docking cradle to the cost of the 300mHz model, you are halfway to the 400 mHz. Also, when you compare the cost of the 400 mHz model to iPAQ and others, it is so cheap it is almost irresitable.
All that said, I would predict, based on conversations I had with Dell prior to purchase that the 300 mHz would suit you fine.

What is your timeline for purchase? Can you hunt for a bargain?
I originally set out to buy the 300 mhz system.
Based on my needs and research, and the fact that the 100mhz xscale bus speed restricts actual percived processing speed to about the same net effect of a 205 Mhz strongarm. I was ok with that purchase.
I ordered my unit and waited 14 days. My 300 was supposed to ship feb 5th. While I waited I kept looking for deals on a couple of discount sites. Like , fat wallet.com and http://www.techbargains.com/dellcoupons.cfm
I found a great deal at http://www.techbargains.com/dellcoupons.cfm
and wound up getting the 400 mhz system with the cradle etc for $225.00 delivered! That is only $40 more than my first order price! I figured the extra ram alone made that a no brainer.
It took some time, 2 hours plus on the phone, and I had to call the order in to make sure the changes took place., but what the heck.
So, the moral is if you can Sidhartha like wait and (be) fast at the right time, you may get your cake and eat it too!
