Greetings,

In my quest to more accurately detect WI-FI networks in the Greater Orlando Florida area, I’ve purchased the antenna seen in the pictures I’ve tried to enclose. I am not limited to this antenna – and can purchase others however, I am at a loss as to how to effectively connect the antenna or any antenna to one of my handhelds – and my laptop in order to effectively increase it’s effective scanning range. I have this antenna, a Sharp Zaurus SL-5500, a Toshiba e740 with USB attachment and internal Wi-Fi, a Casio E-125. My laptop is an HP zt1155 – it has all of the standard ports.

I also have a Delorme GPS which I would also like to use an antenna to extend its range, but I’d currently be utterly appreciative and grateful for any suggestions or information as to how to get this, or any antenna connected to my handhelds primarily and my laptop secondarily. Pictured with my handhelds is my compact flash Wi-Fi card, and, as the observer will notice, it’s configuration makes plugging headphones and other peripheral devices into the top jack of the SL-5500, otherwise, the ports on the devices are free and the e740, of course has its Wi-Fi built in – although its not the most reliable connection in my experience. A lot has been made about the e740 in terms of processing power and other features, but I’m still waiting for a thumb keyboard, or even an foldable keyboard for use with the e740. I was dismayed recently in CompUSA to see these and other peripherals introduced for a newer, less powerful Toshiba handheld called Genie, or something like that – when all that’s available for the e740 are extra styluses and PC Cradles!

In any case – the limitations of each handheld notwithstanding – I’ve owned all of the current popular handhelds with very few exceptions. I tried out the Treo, the Clie and others – and the reason I’ve kept these three is that ounce for ounce, they’ve proven to be the most reliable, rugged, and pleasant to use devices I’ve come across!

I am stumped as to how to connect an antenna to any one of these devices to extend their Wi-Fi search radius and would be grateful to anyone able to offer information on how I might accomplish the task. In fact, I would be quite willing to provide anyone who might be able to help get an antenna connected to any one of these handhelds – with an antenna for their own use, either this one, or the model suggested that work with the handhelds. Or, if preferred, I’d be happy to make a good old fashioned cash contribution!

Either way – I am anxious to extend my scanning range and appreciate any help, suggestions or instructions that might be provided.

With respectful regards,

Andrew Conley

I found that the only benefit to boosting a signal was at my router. The WiFi cards ( compact flash ) might have a connection for boosting signals, but my e740 is limited to the signal sent
in conjunction to my location.

I read an article about 101 hot spots in San Francisco which complained that although you pick up the signal...9 out of 10 times you are
required to have a password or WEP key to access the network. I use my laptops Apple G3
w/ airport card to extend my ad hoc use...my d-link 614+ has very limited frequency radius.
When I purchased a antenna I found out that for every meter of cable used, I loose a certain amout of transmission...so pros and cons with
WiFi signals ( put your laptop in the car with a wifi card and antenna ).....
