I will be traveling through Ireland for 10 days this month, and would like to access my e-mail. My American ISP does not have Ireland-local phone numbers for my dial-up.

My equipment includes netBook, 56K Gold modem, and a Sony-Ericsson 68i. I can connect wired or wirelessly with these devices in the US, and would like to do the same in Ireland.

I think I need to find an ISP service that provides temporary connections (pay-as-you-go), and a mobile phone service that can provide a European GSM card for my phone.

Can any of you give me some direction on how to proceed?

Thanks.

Hi wader

I'm answering this on the assumption that you mean Republic of Ireland and not Northern Ireland.

You should be able to use a pre-paid SIM card in the 68i, assuming that your phone is not locked to a specific network. This link might give some idea:

Not sure what to advise regarding an ISP. I know of one in the UK that can be used as a simple dial-up and pay-as-you-go without having to register - perhaps someone in Ireland knows of a similar one over there?

Does anyone have any further help for wader on this topic?

What I normally do when I travel is to use Roaming. For that to work your ISP must offer that facility.
IPASS and GRIC are the two I use.
Web sites are www.ipass.com and www.gric.com. Just download the dialling softwares and pick out wired phone numbers in Ireland.

An alternative solution is to use pre-paid global roaming internet access service such as http://www.maglobe.com

Haven't used it myself yet, but I intend to if ever I get into a situation such as yours.

I am afraid that some of the solutions offered thus far probably won't work well with a Psion. To the best of my knowledge, the GRIC and IPASS dialers do not come in an Epoc version. Maglobe requires authentication for outgoing emails, which the Epoc mailer famously cannot do. Webmail access with Maglobe would work, but not while dialing in on a GSM.

This seems to leave 2 solutions: 1) sign on, either temporarily or permanently with a US-based ISP that offers dialin in Ireland. There are several of these. 2)sign on temporarily with an Irish ISP. Perhaps someone could point one out that allows signing on via a webpage with a credit card.

Having just looked back at the start of the thread, I see that the original poster was planning to go to Ireland in January. Perhaps he or she can tell us what he did!

No problem with authentication or whatever. Just pick those phone numbers in GRIC(bigger chance of getting those numbers)or in IPASS(less chances) which do not require any authentication or unusual technical requirements.
Suggest that you download GRIC and IPASS dialer and take a look at some of the phone numbers. Look at the properties in detail.
Try it - don't just understand something intellectually.
I do it all the time with my Psion so I know what I am talking about.
