Psion Teklogix is pleased to announce the long awaited update to the netBook Operating System is now available.

Existing netBook customers may download the latest Operating System from the Psion Teklogix partners website where there will also be a number of new support documents. These support documents are to help customers on the use of Ethernet, ISDN and GPRS. In addition, there is a small program called ispWriter.opo for customers wishing to use the Option Globetrotter GPRS card. This application generates an Internet Settings file which can then be used to set up a GPRS connection in the Control Panel.

The latest OS is available in the following localized versions:

English UK
English US
German
French
Spanish

Please note that as a result of the enhancements made to the Operating System for this version, some applications have been removed from the foreign language versions due to limited ROM budget. These applications will be available as optional downloads on the website.

The applications which have been removed and their associated language are as follows:

English UK: complete
English US: complete
German: Bombs, Record, OPL Editor, netStatRF, nFTP
French: netStatRF, nFTP
Spanish: netStatRF, nFTP

Thank you for your considerable patience in waiting for these new releases and please accept my apologies for any inconvenience this may have caused

Thanks Harvey for COMMUNICATING - I'm sure I speak for all of us when I say we really appreciate it.

The support docs look excellent too - well done.

Could you let me know what serial number the new netBooks start from? I just had one from Expansys. If they haven't shipped yet when will they go out?

Can the old ones be upgraded?

I just installed the new OS (453?) and it is very nice; many thanks to those who made it available.

I use my netBook as my primary surfing machine when at home. Sure, I could go out and buy a desktop or a laptop at my home just for surfing, but why?

Has anyone tried to navigate partners.teklogix.com with the netBook opera? It is painful, to say the least. Minutes pass by as opera draws and redraws these silly lines. Scroll the page and wait and wait and wait for it all to redraw. This is probably an opera issue but it humors me that no one at teklogix tried it out.

It would be kinda like AT&T saying, "Don't use an AT&T phone with our long distance service, they don't work well together."

Either way, kudos to those who made this update happen.

Well, yes, and not noticed any problem - unless I'm missing something here? What's your connection method?

Anyhow, I applaud you for using the netBook as your main home machine - I'm so fed up with my PC at the moment, I'm tempted to do the same!

I use 802.11b to a 512kbps connection.

IIRC, the main site was livable. The problem was on the OS download screen.

Go try to download the OS on the netBook and let me know if you experience different results.

Oh, OK, guess I misunderstood what you were saying. I already have the OS downloaded (via PC) so haven't tried it from the netBook.

Harvey, noticed that the error in World Time App, whereby all Spanish towns have dialling codes still 00 34.

This is not a problem for me personally, but since I spent some time previously correcting them, is there a way of restoring the correct info easily?

This also applies to my home city, Bolton which is 53deg 33 min 36.8 sec N and 2deg 27min 27.3sec (home) without having to reload on each hard reset?

This will apply to everyone who adds cities etc

thanks for your indication, i'm already downloading the updated os. but before installing it on my nB, can you tell me sincerely if it really worth changing the os to 158? are there significative differences?

'Scuse the cheek, but have u been under a rock? :p

Yes, the new OS is definitely worth upgrading to. Over 156, it now contains:

full ethernet support
Opera instead of Psion's awful Web for WWW browsing.
nFTP - an FTP client
RFnetStat - a WLAN signal strength meter

So now the netBook truly is a netBook!

If you meant is the new OS worth downloading compared to the previous build of release 158, then the answer is still yes - it contains a good few bugfixes and the second two apps listed above.

HTH,
