My doctor (young and still broke) saw my Mobil Pro and fell in love. He was inquiring about newer ones...He had some questions...
1) Do they support USB or other devices?
2) How much storage do they have on board?
3) Will they run non-installed programs not specifically written for WinCE?
4) What is the price ranges for older (but newer than my 770) handheld devices with keyboards?

I have the MobilePro 800 (with keyboard). You can find them on ebay for really cheap. YOu might want to refer him there. Mine doesn't support USB, but then again I don't really need it to. Is there a particular USB device he wants to use? Mine has 32 megs (16 RAM, 16 storage). I also have a number of CompactFlash cards I swap in (8mb,64mb,256mb) so storage isn't an issue.
Mine just runs WinCE programs, but if you want there are emulators to do old DOS programs, Gameboy games, etc. But you won't get Win2k/XP programs running on this :)
I really like it. Its a lot lighter than a notebook and still does a lot of stuff I would wnat to do. I have Terminal Services on there so I can remotely jump onto my XP machien at home (so its like I'm using my XP machine with all its programs, internet access, etc). Its actually faster surfing the web through termserv than it is using IE on my MP800. I have a wireless orinoco gold card that i use to termserv to xp from anywhere in the house.

The Mobilepro 880, the newest (last) of the large format Mobilepro units, has a USB port. It is the only one of the family to have one. I have no knowledge of its compatibility with USB devices.

If he's interested in USB, maybe & "storage" maybe he doesn't understand that this thing runs on CE, and isn't a laptop. :-) If he's looking for a little laptop, Toshiba librettos are cool!
Or, once you've convinced him to go CE, e-bay is the place to get 'em cheap. There is someone that has Intermec 6651 (I think that's the model) CE devices on there--HPC2000 pro, full keyboard, built-in webcam, flip-out design (can be used as tablet or clamshell), 800X480 TFT 7.1" display, Type II PC Card, CF, etc. Nice looking units at $349.
As for the MP780--I used to own one, and there was no USB port on it. Maybe on the 790?.. . . but I've never seen a CE device w/USB. I think they drain too much power.
I just bought a Mobilepro 770 of the 'bay, and once I get it I can let you know if it's worth him buying one there. The guy I bought it from sold it for $125 shipped. Doubt it'll be as nice as my 780 I used to have, but it'll suffice! :-)
Good luck,
Anthony
