I am looking into an i330 but one of the tings we must have is text messages. I see other post complaing SMS does not work and may never work which is ok for me assuming e-mail notification works. I am trying to use this device as a pager as well as a phone. Can someone out there explain if this works or not? W ebasically have 2 way pagers now and would like to use the phone instead to eliminate one device. Also, what type of an alert is used when a mesasge comes in? Is it a simple beep like a new e-mail or can it be set up with a repeating beep like a phone ringing or a typical pager?
Thanks,
David

the samsung i330 is the lastest consumer friendly palm os phone from sprint.
It WILL do everything you are asking of it except sms(or commonly known as instant) messaging.
in order for the email notification to work you will have to subscribe to pcs wireless web, but do not have to subscribe to pcs vision(which is an absolute waste of money unless you are a contractor or real estate agent.)
the tones can be changed on some units, and i cannot tell you which ones. some parts of the country use different software/programs/carriers etc..... (even if you told me where you were i couldnt answer this, on all sprint pcs service.)
for the most part you will be pleased...but one question? if you have the phone available, wouldnt you rather use that?(vrs the messaging)

Thanks Kris,
>but one question? if you have the phone available, wouldnt you rather use that?(vrs the messaging)
We have automated systems that page us as a notification of a problem. The systems can be set up to send an e-mail but I must receive the notification within minutes and not hours. If an e-mail is sent to the phone does it automatically go through or does the phone have to dial-in to pick up the e-mail?

Isn't there a basic plan tha comes with unlimited use of PCS-Vision? What would I gain if I went to the pcs wireless web?
Thanks,
David

in order for the text messasging to work(recieving) the computer must dial your phone number, get your voicemail, select option 2, then leave a return a phone number or message.
the only way to do this online is to have a message typed in at mobile.yahoo.com or some other mobile messanger and it will send it directly to your phone.
sound kind of complicated.
what your system sounds like, it runs on sms, which is currently NOT available on sprint pcs, or any other carrier for that matter.through the use of pda or smartphones.
as for the email message,(I use the i300) I must dial in first to recieve messages. the i330 i am unsure about as i have not tested this phone. (they skipped me for a proto and gave me the i500, currently not avail.)
ask the sales rep about this or call 877-211-4727
plans are available with or w/o the vision. if you dont need to take pictures then dont get a plan w/vision. that is the catch. $$$ for web pictures only. this does not include browsing!!!!!!!!!!
so as for the loss/gain vision is not worth the $$ unless you are into pictures.
hope this helps,
kris

Kris,
Thanks for all of the help. Now more questions. I know most phones can receive a message by sending an email to phone_number@provider.com. Is this true for the i330/Sprint? It seems like the hardware vendors and providers are missing the boat on these devices if someone can not send and receive such as a pager. Seems like the paging providers do not want to get into the cell business and cell providers do not want to get into paging. I guess we will need to continue on with our individual device for each function.

unfortunatly for sprint pcs if you dial your phonenumber@sprintpcs.com
you will recieve a message sent to your online mailbox at sprintpcs.com not your phone,if your lucky.
i have heard numerous reports of messages even getting lost on the way!
also you are right. sprint is in the phone business not sms or text messaging while skynet and etc dont let you make phone calls.
its a give and take relationship.
to be honest, idont really need either, i just need the palm.

I use to be able to use my I300 as a wireless modem to connect to my ISP.
It doesn't work with the I330...
...anyone have any suggestions?
