does anybody happen to know whether there is a utility which can provide character counting in epoc word (or symbian text editor as well)?
at the moment there is a word count function on both, but for people who need to know how many characters they typed - e.g. journalists - this utility is just not enough!
Journalists seem to appreciate the overall quality of the netbook, so this may be a useful note for people at psion.
I do think it would be quite easy for a programmer to develop such a thing.
if someone knows more, please let me know

CountSigns:

count Signs (text, spaces and punctuation), words, sentences and paragraphs in any

thank you for your kind reply!
I have just downloaded this utility on my nB but being far from home at least for a couple of days, I'll be able to unzip it as soon as I come back.
therefore I am going to try it by the half of this week.
BTW, do you happen to know an unzip kind of a utility
(freeware, possibly)?
The only zip program I've ever found for EPOC is RMRZip (previously known as S5Zip). Its shareware I'm afraid. The author's URL is http://www3.sympatico.ca/serge.chestopalov/rmrzip.htm which has links to where you can download it.

I think RMRZip is your best bet, and if you follow diem's link you will find an option to download it as an unzipped .SIS file - since you don't already have a zip utility! ;) At least you can try it out before deciding whether to buy.
A couple of other options:
Epocware has "Essential System Tools" which includes a zip manager as well as other utilities.
http://psion-software.epocware.com/Essential_System_Tools.html
If it has to be a free one, then you could investigate gzip:
http://www.dtek.chalmers.se/~reuters/epoc/
I'm assured it works (haven't tried it!) but it's somewhat more complicated to install and use.

Hmmm, I never found a problem with RMRZip, but Navigator sounds interesting. Do you have a URL for it?
Thanks

Julie,
Have a look at http://www.purplesoft.com/index.html?p=productsymbian&id=4. I am sure that you will have come across it before since it has been around for ages.

Thanks Simon, Zolee - I knew Navigator rang a bell, just couldn't place it. I guess I was thinking on the single track of just a zip manager.
It's not something I could see myself needing/using, to be honest. :)

Zolee,
Not everyone wants or needs a zip/unzip tool on their Psion. Many people will perform this task on their desktop PC and then transfer files over to their Psion. In addition, I find the standard EPOC operating system sufficient and do not need to enhance it with a third-party file browser tool. We're not saying that Navigator is not good, just that we don't all need to use it.
