Hi,

I've been playing with my "new" 5mx lately, and one of the things I'd like to do with it is to use my Earthlink dialup connection to Telnet to one of three AS/400's at work. I'd essentially like to dial in to work for the "light stuff" without having to pull out and boot up my work-issued Thinkbrick, er, IBM Thinkpad.

I haven't the foggiest idea how to get the unit to do it, though, which isn't surprising how little I know on the subject. Seems like it's instead trying to connect to a Borg vessel via serial port, or run an assembly line in Montana through a light socket interface. Which is kinda cool, I guess...

In Windows, I'd just type "Telnet xx.xxx.x.xx" to telnet to the correct IP and go. Can I do something like this with the Comms app or Hermes?

TIA!

Well, I enjoyed your post Z-man, but I'm afraid I haven't the foggiest clue how to do this either!

I'm moving this query to the Internet issues area, as it is not wholly specific to the 5mx and will probably receive more attention there.

I thank you kindly for the redirection then, netBookBabe. :)

The Comms application and Hermes can typically be used for serial terminal connections, and I've used my Series 5 as effectively a portable terminal on Sun systems.

Hermes does Telnet over TCP and this sounds like what you are after however, but if you need SSH you might want syossh (ask google) which is EPOC native, though in an alpha state it does work nicely if rough around the edges. If you just need Telnet, Hermes (or jtelnet) should cover you and are more developed.

Borg via a serial port :D

In Hermes type Ctrl-K to bring up the connection window, then enter your IP or domain name (and port if non-standard) then away you go. Of course, you'll need to have set up a modem so as to find the internet...

I have a slightly unrelated issue regarding the Comms application, is there any known way to send the Break ^B, interrupt ^C (or other) signals? Hermes is convenient but does not do SSH, if I can get all the needed utility from the Comms app (in ROM) I'm eager to regain the petty amount of disk space Hermes uses :).
