Hotsync using USB

I am trying to connect my IIIx to my laptop that does not have a serial port. I have a USB to Serial converter that works fine with my Psion organiser but hotsync cannot see the port (Comm 5). Any ideas on how to get this to work

How are you connecting the USB to Serial? I assume you coming off the USB on the Laptop, then offering the serial connector to the Palm cradle's serial correct? Should work if all the pinouts are there and not a specialized pin set for your old unit.
And why COM 5? This may be the real issue. When you install the Palm Desktop and the Palm is in the hotsync cradle the software wants to make the connection on COM 1 and it has little use for any other. There is good "support" for com port issues at Palm.com. A link to the page with all the COM port info is below.
