Our business uses cisco wireless access points and i cannot use any other brand except cisco cards to connect to our network. We use the cisco proprietary software. I cannot find a cisco cf wireless card. Is there such a thing? Is there another brand that may emulate cisco?

thanks

Bernie,

I may be wrong on this, but I don't think that it will matter what brand of wireless card that you use. Remember, we are talking about radio frequency here. If the access points are using 2.4 GHz then you can use any 802.11b or 802.11g CF wireless card to connect to the network, as long as you know the WEP key. I think maybe you should look further into this.

Chriz is only partially correct... The wireless access point must conform the the 802.11(X) standard. not all do. It is irregardless of frequency. No doubt your access points at work are proprietary just as ours are. They will also employ atleast 128bit Wep and MAC address security.

You need to contact your Network admins and see what they require to access their network via wireless.

I was simply stating that I don't think that a wireless access point can be proprietary in that only one brand of card can access the network.

It absolutely can be strictly proprietary, but it is not likely in this case. We have used several proprietary wireless and wired schemes that are not standards based for evaluation purposes. It almost always ends up cheaper and better to use the standards based equipment and programs.

Hello,

I work at cisco presales, you are correct, cisco does not offer the CF client cards. Current it is only the PCMCIA and PCI. Also you are talking about cisco's LEAP tech. This is much more secure than WEP. You will need cisco AP also RADIUS or TACACS server for authenication. If you need help, let me know.
