Just spent several days searching the web, then about an hour on the phone with Handspring support. Windows 2000 refuses to accept the Handspring driver (Palmusbd.inf) as a valid USB driver.

After trying a variety of things I had already tried, the Handspring support rep had me check the USB controller under Device Manager (it's Standard Universal PCI to USB Host Controller). At this point, he told me I need to either get a serial cradle or a USB to PCI adapter card.

I know many people have had this problem, but most seemed to find a solution. Any advice before I shell out for a new cradle?

I'm sorry that I'm not computer techie when it comes to drivers and usb kinda stuff, but I'm running a treo 270 via USB w/Win2k with no problems. When I initially installed the updated palm desktop software for the 270 and tried to sync I did have a similar issue which HS support corrected. I don't remember exactly what they had me do but I remember going into the device manager and deleted the usb driver that was installed originally for the USB hotsync and than reinstalled the software and it's been fine ever since June.
I'd call back and try them again. You probably just got someone who is isn't knowledgeable enough with Win2K.
Also you might try the USB reg utility from HS support.
