compac flash cards

I hear that compac flash cards are by far the fastest type of media cards for the pocket pc. If this is true can somebody tell me the strengths and weaknesses of a compac flash card.
if i have a type 2 slot can I put type one cards in it? i am getting an axim pleez reply.:D

OBTW, Type II slots ARE backwards compatible on the Axim.
