Hi all.
I need a little help on this subject. Basically what i want to do is setup my 7book to my network at work.
Could you tell me what hardware i require, cables etc.
( I have a Psion 56k+ Fax Gold Card Wan Global PC Card, would i beable to use this or do i need to get another PCMCIA Card?)

What is the difference between Lan & Wan - ~~sorry i really need a networking for dummies book.

I think i would beable to set up the ethernet settings okay, its just the hardware and cable etc that i'm not sure about.

Thank you

Does your PC Card have two connectors along its edge, or just one? Another way to ask this is did it come with two dongles (the little tail thing that converts the thin connector to a full-size modem or ethernet socket) or just one?

In theory, your card could work, but I have a memory that the WAN Global is not supported by the netBook OS drivers :( I have not been able to absolutely confirm or deny this, which is why the card is not listed on my compatibility list (I presume you've already checked out my FAQ in relation to your question).

In terms of cables, if you have the dongle, then all you need is a standard ethernet patch cable, just like the one you plug into your PC at work.

If you don't have the dongle, it would probably be cheaper (and safer) to buy a new card than source a spare for yours, only to find that the card is unsupported anyway.

Now here comes the rub. The ethernet drivers only support Psion ethernet cards, and Psion don't make them anymore! The only source is resellers who still have stock, or eBay.

My Gold Card has only one slot so i'm sure you are right. Will just have to keep looking on ebay for a Psion Gold Card & dongle - (should it say Combine IT card on it? ). If i do manage to get a Psion Gold card will it work on any build machine or do i have to be careful as to which one i get.

I had a look at your site and was a little confused as to he OS bit-

I checked my machine and it is build 450 , but in you W/lan compatibility Table i saw OS build 751, 754 & 756 mmm
is that the drivers or something maybe i did not read the page properly.

Diem thanks for your help so far i hope you can help me further on the issue and even further when i manage to get my hands on the correct Gold Card.

Kenny

Can I borrow your "Networking for Dummies" book when you've finished with it please? ;)

I think these different Gold Cards are very confusing - it sounds like the one you have is the same as mine - a modem-only one, not Ethernet. I've also got a LAN Global 10/100 Ethernet card which is not a modem. They both say "Combine-iT" on them.

As I understand it, the Dacom branded ones draw too much power to be suitable for a 7Book, so I believe you do need to look for a Combine-iT one, and probably one that is modem and Ethernet as well. That's what I could do with! One of these days I will get around to exploring networking.

The reference to 751, 754 and 756 is relevant to the version of your S7 prior to its upgrade to 7Book. Your machine is reporting 450 because you now have the netBook personality module and OS installed.

Kenny,

Everything Julie said is spot on. Pretty darn good for someone who has yet to explore networking! ;)

Your old S7 personality module will tell you which version of the OS it came with - we use this a rough guide as to which motherboard your machine has - the newer it is the more current it will be able to supply to the PC Card slot and therefore the wider range of cards it will support.

CombineIT cards are definitely a better bet than Dacom cards.

Diem does that mean i have to put in my old S7 Personality Module, and then check the OS??

If i do that it means that i would be doing a hard reset and would loose all my data, right ??

If so i will just back up everything to my computer when i have sometime then check what my OS is on my S7 personality module

Thank You
