Dear All
I have attempted to follow the instructions for upgrading the OS on my Netbook but it doesn't seem to want to load. After I remove all the power and switch it back on it doesn't ask for a CF to be inserted. The EPOC screen comes up and when I go into the machine information it says it has software version1.05(254)build 756.
Any ideas what I am doing wrong?

Are you removing the backup battery also? Removing all sources of power is needed for the ROM to be deleted.

Yup, all batteries removed, mains unplugged for 10 mins on the second attempt and still no joy. I am beginning to suspect that I may have a hybrid machine as a couple of screens says 'Series 7' whilst others say netBook. Since it didn't cost me anything I'm not too bothered but is there any way to tell for sure if the internals are netBook or Series 7.

I've heard a couple of instances of people buying a "netBook" second hand, only to discover it's really an S7 inside and someone has done a crafty swap.
Sounds suspiciously like that could be the case. Glad to hear you didn't pay megabucks for it. :)

The right-hand cover under the screen is where the 'identity module' lives. This is the unit that dictates whether the machine is a netBook or Series 7. On my 'pure' netBook, this has a label on it with 'release 011' on it (this is the version of the bootloader that loads the OS from a CF card).
I'm guessing that a Series 7 module will have something else on it. As it goes, the fact that leaving all the batteries out for 10 mins is a dead giveaway that it is a Series 7 - especially since the version numbers you quote are exactly those of the Series 7 OS.
Apparently www.expansys.com are taking orders for the netBook identity module, if you're interested..

So a Series 7 in a netbook case, since I got it from a guy whose company was phasing out its netbooks and Series 7s for free I don't think I'll worry too much.
I'll wait and see if Expansys come through with the goods and I'll think about getting one.
Thanks all

Hi there Ian,
Have a look under the right hand cover behind the keyboard (as you tilt the screen foward slightly). I have a 7 and the when you open the flap you will see a card with 3 large chips on it. The right hand one of these has Psion 7 Series written on it. If you have this then they have probably swapped the chip.
