I followed the instructions in Diem's posting (good advice!) and searched for likely terms before Iposted, but drew a blank, so here goes...

Having acquired one of the Vodafone Live! handsets (a Sharp GX10) just before Christmas (Iwork for Vodafone, and it was on a staff offer), Idecided it would be handy to be able to use it with my Psions (Ihave both a 5mX and a Series 7) with the Sharp phone when I'm away (when I'm at home Iuse the Gold Card modem in the series 7 with a fixed phone line). Thanks to Mike McConnell's excellent web site (flattery may get me somewhere :) ) Ihave been able to set up the Psions to work with my wife's Nokia 8310 and the company's T68i, and it's very nice to be able to use GPRSto pick up my email when I'm away from home. If Ican do the same with the Sharp, it will save SIM-swapping (though Inotice that the infra-red window on the Sharp is at the end rather than on the side as it is with the 8310 and the T68i, so the layout on the table top won't be so convenient...).

Can anyone help with how to set up the Sharp GX10 and a 5mX or Series 7 to work with each other, please?

Thanks in advance

Can anyone help with how to set up the Sharp GX10 and a 5mX or Series 7 to work with each other, please? I think the question to be asked is "What have you tried so far and what was the result?" There really isn't that much difference usually between configuring the Psion to use one phone and another and, as you already have experience with two phones, you should be able to make progress with the new one.

If you are getting a timeout without dialling, you may have to set the 'Type' in Control Panel / Modems to Fixed line instead of Mobile. Also, creating the file path C:\Logs\Etel\ and looking at the log file in the Etel folder, after trying to connect, might give an indication of any problem.

Dear Ian, Mark,

Hoping you're still following this (because it's a very old thread, as far as I can see), I was just wondering whether Ian managed to get Sharp GX10i to work on GPRS with 5mx. I am looking to buy a GX10i or the GX20i which will be available soon (if not already), so I'd want to be able to use my 5mx for as long as it lasts.

Thanks in advance

I'm afraid that Ihaven't had any success with getting my GX10 to listen to my Psion. The setup for the Psion isn't a great problem, it's the Sharp which is obscure!Itried tinkering with a copy of the default Vodafone Live! profile (set the APNto "internet", the user ID to "web" and the password to "web" as described in the document which Ipulled down from Mike McC's web site), but when Itried to set up a connection for the email client, it didn't even get as far as setting up the GPRSconnection (and yes, I*did*remember to activate the IR on the phone...). I'll have another ferret around on the web to see if there's anything been posted since Ifirst posted my question on this forum, and if Ihave any luck I'll post an update.

Cheers

As usual, my advice is to go right back to basics:

- use Comms to see if the phone's modem is responding and then try connecting to your ISP.

- use John McAleely's "The Dialer" to establish the initial internet connection, instead of connecting with an internet client (Email, Web, Opera or whatever).

- make sure that you can "walk before you run" by getting a normal GSM dialup connection working reliably before attempting GPRS.

- use a log file to diagnose a problem during the dialup phase.

Have a look at the Modem Troubleshooting file on my General Info web page for more details of this.
