I found this cool software suite, Iambic office . . supposedly allows you to download and synch both email and Word & Excel docs. Plus it has a Tiny Sheet, spreadsheet app and FastWriter doc app. I am trying to see if anyone has used it yet.
According to Iambic tech support, the keyboard device on the TREO does not work with FastWriter . . which is something that I fear may permeate the scenario with the old Palm OS .. older software .. and therefore no compatability with the main reason I want the device - qwerty. Anyone out there?? Hello. Anyone??:)

I haven't used Iambic Office, but I have used Documents to Go (by Dataviz, dataviz.com) and QuickOffice (by Cutting Edge Software, cesinc.com). You can open and edit Word, Excel, and Powerpoint documents in both. I have had no problem with eithr when it came to the Treo keyboard. I would say my preference is Documents to Go, it seemed as syncing was just a bit more seamless. Thought these might serve as possible alternatives.

Thanks Matthew - very helpful . . these did not even appear as potentials in my search off the palm site.
Having used both - you may have had experience with varying email programs . . what do you use with the TREO? Datavis shows an Inbox to go program . . and also, what service provider did you use them with; cingular, or sprint?

In case anyone else is reading these . . I found that Corsoft www.corsoft.net provides the translator 3rd party service by which individuals can have their documents downsized and accepted on the TREO from POP3 (not just Outlook or Notes corporate). This ought to be pretty useful for independents like myself.
If you were to go with handspring.com's version; I'm not sure it does this translation . . and the price is the same at $49.99 per year for individuals. How that interracts with Sprint is not yet known . . because with Sprint you can basically get the email for free . . but I doubt anyone can say how the TREO 300 memory handles large docs and spreadsheets at this time.
