I have upgraded from Palm Vx to Palm M515.
All the programs transferred smoothly and all seem to operate correctly.
Only one problem: The M515 beam capability has been cut off by one of the programs.
I have checked beam reception ON in the prefs section.
I have carried out a hard reset (several by now) and without any other programs (other than original Palm) the beam works.
I tried loading everything but the hacks - still no beam.
Major programs: TealDoc 5.0, MiniCalc 6.4.6, WordSmith, AvantGo, thinkDB2, FlashPro 2.05, CryptInfo 4.0.7, NeoCal 1.5, SmartDoc, SysInfo, TravelPal and some games.
Any suggestions on which programs might be blocking the beam capability of the M515 ?
Thanks for any help !

apj,

Do you happen to have a program running to speed up the CPU, such as FastCPU, Afterburner or another? If so those will stop the beam from working. If you have one of those, disable it and try the beam, if it works you have found the problem.

Of all the programs you listed, I only use ThinkDb and had no problems with beaming since I have used it. I did have a problem with ThinkDb crashing after I upgraded from a M505 to a M515. I just did a sync and each time I ran ThinkDb it crashed. I checked their site and they said that in case of a change of PDA a sync would not work, to reinstall ThinkDb from scratch and that worked for me, no more crashes.

Sorry if this was not the help you needed.

Have a good day,
Calvados

Thank you Calvados !
I tried Afterburner on my Vx and it crashed it so often I deleted it and let the Palm take its own sweet time. The M515 is somewhat faster, but after my experience with Afterburner, I will leave the speedup subject alone.
I do not have any other CPU "improvers" installed.

apj,

I just found a post on Palminfocenter that sounds a little like your problem. The person upgraded from a Vx to a 515 and had problems until he got rid of FlashPro. Try doing a sync but iliminating Flashpro and see if that helps. I am sure that you can reinstall Flashpro afterwards as I have seen quite a few posts here of people who use it on a 515 without any problems.

I will put the link to the post I found:

Hope this helps & have a good day,

Thanks for the reference.
Flash Pro version 2.05 was issued to cope with the M515, and it is operating OK.
I'm waiting for a program which will allow me to get rid of five language sets (not needed) in Flash memory, to free that up.
I also tried without Flash Pro and the beam was still blocked.
Thanks again ! I appreciate your time and effort !

I've got your answer since it happened to me also going from a IIIc to 505. The culprit is a 'serial driver' that is quite likely the first file listed on both on the 515 AND the c:/palm/backup/yourname folder. What you need to do is A) backup your data fully in whatever way you nornally do, B) delete this file (it will be named '68'......something') from the backup folder and the archive folder on the PC side, C) do a hard reset of the device, D) do a fresh hotsync after the hard reset. Do this and your beaming will work fine!! Good luck!

dequardo !
Thanks so very, very much !
Removing the "serial driver" from the backup folder, hard resetting and hotsyncing did the trick. Beam works fine now !
Any idea where this driver came from ? Do Palm include just in case someone has to use a serial connection rather than USB ?

It's leftover from earlier models and/or an OS update is all that I know. A kind superuser helped me out several months ago. Glad
I could help in return.

The driver was part of the patch upgrade to the OS from 3.5 to 3.5.3.
It is always good to clean house before dumping all of the accumulated bits and pieces from the old Palm on to the new.

Dr. Mud,
Thank you.
I would indeed like to clean house, but am not aware exactly HOW to.
I would most appreciate your guidance.
Thanks again.

If You are also tired of carrying about a lot of useless languages in Your Palm, go to:
http://www.brayder.com
They have a program called JackSprat, which will remove all languages but one. They have also a program called JackFlash, to get other programs into the ROM, but I suppose, Your Flashpro can du this just as well.

Good luck - remember to make a backup first!

You may want to look into buying a really good file manager that will give you the creator ID so you can look for files that are orphaned and no longer related to an application running on the Palm. My favorite is myWorkBench. It is extremely powerful.
