i'm trying to connect to the Internet with my iPAQ 3975 on my home network.
i have a Netgear MA701 CF card and a Netgear MR314 wireless router. i have one laptop wirelessly connected to the network and two PCs with ethernet cable connections. i have dhcp enabled. i have matched the ESSID to the router, although it should connect configured to ANY. i have reinstalled the driver/utility. i have updated the firmware on the router. i get a 90-100% signal strength. i have tried a static IP with the correct gateway and subnet mask settings. at one time on the router's dhcp table i saw an IP address show up for the iPAQ. i checked the MAC address and it was the same as the iPAQ. it still didn't access the Internet even when the iPAQ's server-assigned IP showed up on the table. i've rebooted everything- modem, router, entire network, etc. several times. i still can't get it to work.

CAN ANYONE HELP ME?

Make sure that you have disabled WEP on the router. Most CF cards do not have that capability. If you are using a DHCP assigned address, everything should pop up. Good Luck.

i tried that, but thanks for your reply. actually this card (Netgear MA701) does have 40/64 and 128 bit encryption capability.

i'm going to try placing the router in a higher position. it's only 18 in. off the floor in its current location. i've updated the firmware on the router. i'm also going to try disabling or disconnecting all the 2.4 ghz wireless devices nearby- a laptop and a cordless phone.

How do you connect to the internet on the pc side? Can you ping the ipaq from the desktop and vice versa? If you can, did you enter the DNS server information on the wireless adapter on the ipaq to be the same as the pc that connects to the internet?

i connect to the Internet through the router on the pc side. the router is wireless with 4 ethernet ports. the pc is connected to the router with cat5 patch cable. the router is a dhcp server and also has a wireless laptop that connects to it just fine. the router will not assign an IP to the iPAQ, although it did assign one a few days ago, but i was still unable to connect to the Internet. i know it assigned an IP to the iPAQ because i checked the dhcp table and matched the IP to the MAC address of the iPAQ. it hasn't duplicated that since. i have tried assigning a static IP with specific DNS server- the same one that shows up as DNS on the pc. i can only connect to the Internet when the iPAQ is in its cradle.

Is there any firewall setting that needs to be modified to add another computer(ipaq) to the network?
Another workaround solution is to install a proxy server software on the pc, and put that pc ip on the ipaq's proxy setting.

dude,
no firewall settings. although i'm thinking the problem is down to settings somewhere or just plain interference from the existing 2.4ghz appliances. almost everyone thinks this should work with dhcp just like my laptop does. matching the SSID or configuring with ANY (network) gives a very clear indication from the led that it is detecting the router with a strong signal strength. 90-100%.
i will try everything evenutally. thanks.

there is that one odd moment when the iPAQ clearly showed up on the dhcp table of the router, but it still wouldn't browse the Internet. that makes me think it may be interference.
thanks again. i will let you know what happens when i try your suggestions.

I have exact configuration that you do. I use Linksys wireless hub, dynamic address assignment, cable connection, 7 devices connected, some wireless, some normal ethernet. Bought socket CF wireless card for ipaq 3630. Installed, address assigned properly, all worked like a charm. Keep trying, go back to square one, be sure and power down all the network equipment. It will work.

thanks, that's very encouraging. i talked to compaq today and we decided something similar to your suggestion. i'm going to do a hard reset, which will clear everything in RAM, reset my active partnership and install the MA701 software first. reconfigure my settings, etc. in other words start from scratch. there could be something on the iPAQ that is causing a conflict with the MA701 and its driver/utility software. i've only had this a couple of weeks, so if i lose some data (i will do a backup) it's not a big deal. i will take your advice and power everything else on the network down when i configure the wireless connection and test it. i'll let you know what happens.

thanks again,

I have had a similar problem with the set up of a Compaq 3760 with the Compaq WL110 wireless network PC Card.

I solved the problem after attempting the ping the device and finding that only one in 4 pings are returned.

The driver for the Compaq WL110 card takes you through a setup routine and asks specfically for allowing PC card power mangement. The default was checked "on" and when I turned it off I had wireless. All four ping tests returned and I had instant IE access.

See if your card driver talks about power managment.

Thats all I know.

Sincerely,
:)
