I have a Mobilepro 780 (just bought used - awesome) that I cannot seem to find a pcmcia nic that it likes. I have tried 3 now. The current one is a 3COM 3CXE589ET, MP780 recognizes it as a NIC, but cannot get it configured. In fact, I have no lights on the end of it (I think there are suppose to be LED's on the end to at least show a good link).
I found a winCE 2.11 driver for it, but upon trying to install - it asked for my winCE OS disk to be available in the CD rom of the synced desktop. I don't have a winCE CD, should I. I thought the OS was hard coded into ROM, so a hard reset was effectively a "format c and re install". ?? I don't know, I'm new to this mobile computer world.
Anyway, I'm pretty handy with my home network and the one I run at work, but I'm stumped on this nic problem. Could anyone suggest a brand of NIC they know will work, or what I might be doing wrong. I have searched high and low and find very little info on winCE or MP780 and Jornada like devices.
Thank you for your help.

I have two Socket brand LP-E PCMCIA cards, and they work great. Comes with an install disk that installs through ActiveSync. I'm thinking about going wireless, so let me know if you want one.
I think all of the "newer" (low-power) socket PC Cards & PCMCIA cards have drivers for CE that actually work on this device.

chivy,
Let me check the going rate, and I'll get back to you. You can edit your e-mail out of your last message--I have it now. That way the 'bots' don't pick you up and put you on their junk lists!
I have 2 780's, and it works with both of 'em. I'll even try to help you get 'er set up.
Thanks,
Anthony

Can you surf with IE and transfer files via network? and or activesync thru the nic? I would like all of those, but am really looking forward to internet access, via my cable connection.
Also, unrelated to original question, I have problems with programs that need visual basic. Isn't VBCE already on my 780? included with CE 2.11? If not, is there a free download to run programs but not write programs?
Actually, if you would, look for a new post on this topic, that way others can benifit from reponses as well.
Thanks

Chivy,
As far as ActiveSync--yes, you can do it through the NIC, and it's significantly faster than serial. Surfing the web--yes, but with the limitations of PocketIE 3.0 (and there are many limitations).
As for transferring files, you can do that through ActiveSync, as your HPC will show up basically like a drive on your host PC.
Does anyone know if you can "connect to the network" and search for files on the LAN? How about Printing?
As for the VBCE question, I haven't done any VBCE progs for a LONG time, but I seem to recall that you (as the developer) have the choice to include all necessary files, or just include "program" files when creating the installer. This can cause problems, because (as is with your case) all of the necessary files are not included. The only reason to do this would be that the size of the application with VBCE files vs. application alone is about 1.5meg difference (anyone may correct me if I'm wrong). Go back to the site you downloaded the progs from, and see if they have a "complete" version or a version for people who have VBCE installed. I have run into this problem A LOT with PocketC applications. I still can't find PocketC!!!!
Thanks,
Anthony

Yes, you can do limited "browsing" of local network drives, but remember that there is no "Network Neighborhood" in CE, so you will have to manually type in the actual path to the network share and then you can "browse" from that point.
Printing works wonderfully! I print directly from PocketWord all the time via my home network. The only real problem is the limitations of the Pocket applications don't allow you to truly preview what you're going to print (pagination, etc.), but it does work well.
