Is anyone actually using a wireless card (CF or PCMCIA) that works on their Mobilepro 770 or 780?

I've seen Chris Herrera's site, but I just want to verify before purchasing what does & doesn't work. I am specifically interested in orinoco gold or silver wireless PCMCIA cards, but wanted to know if they would work.

Feel free to put any WiFi cards on this post, and let us know if they do or don't work!

Someone mentioned the "Socket" low-power wireless CF card, and said that worked, too.

Well, I got lucky and the cards I ordered actually work! They're EPoX EWL-C11 PCMCIA cards ($25 each). The drivers on the CD, however, do not work. They are for "ARMS" processors only. But after a little searching, I found drivers that seem to work just fine. You can even use the 128bit Encryption and set your own encryption key, if your router/gateway will accept it.

I have a D-Link DI-614+ and 2 EWL-C11 cards and 2 MP780s, and all seems to work fine. If you decide to get these cards, I'm not sure how much energy they draw, but I have been able to get on line, sync, and use the encryption with software I found. If you decide to get these cards for use with a MobilePro (mine's a 780), let me know, and I'll e-mail the drivers to you.

I purchased the card at networkingoutlet off of Yahoo's stores for $25 each (got one for my wife, too). Funny thing is, I haven't been able to get it working in Win2K, but it works great with CE!

I am a new member and new to windows ce. I tried M701 Netgear wireless CF card and it does not seem to engage properly with the CF slot (I have other CF card devices that work perfectly so it's not the slot). The Mobilepro 770 keeps asking me to insert the card.

I also tried the PC card neatgear card M401 and downloaded the compaq driver suggested in the windowsce.net website and I get an error message that says: "wl100sta.exe cannot find 'WL100STA" (or one of its components). Make sure path and filename are correct and that all required libraries are available."

Anyone have idea how I can make either one of these cards work?

Can you please send me the drivers for the EWL-C11 or where
you located them.
Thank you,

Avaya Wireless World Card Silver, PCMCIA, excellent operation with my MP 770. The correct CE driver is included on the CD. Worked right out of the box. Would expect the Gold version to work as well. Avaya is the latest incarnation of the Lucent WaveLAN series.

I was able to successfully use the compaq WL100 driver for my netgear m401 wireless card on my NEC mobilpro 770. The key thing was downloading the NEC software patches found the NEC site (by the way the web designer for NEC should be fired or at least forced to use it - its awful).

Now does anyone know how to check msn email from the wireless network?

I realize it's a bit late in coming... (I just read the post)
I have successfully used an Ornioco Silver 11Mbs wireless card in my Mobilepro 780. The drivers are available here (http://www.expressresponse.com/cgi-bin/proxim02/showFaq.cgi?search_erproduct=)
Hope this helps.

Has anyone gotten a linksys WPC11 ver 2.5 or ver 3.0 card to work in their MP? I have one I'm fighting with now. the driver & config utility load up just fine. I have good strong signal, but the MP keeps telling me that it cant get an IP address from the DHCP server. but I can remove the WiFi card and stick in a wired 10Base card and it works just fine....any thoughts would be great.

I used an Epox (as stated above) with the generic Compaq driver, and had the same issue. I ended up manually configuring the TCP/IP info. Use a static IP, and put your router address in for the server, then put the computer you want to activesync with as your WINS server.

For some reason DHCP didn't work with my card...

Good luck!

I did all that and the MP seemed to think a little harder before telling me that the internet site is unavailable. although the DHCP messages went away, I still cannot get on the net. After looking around at some other links I did find that my WPC11 is compatible and will work on my MP 780 so Im sure its something Im overlooking. Again, any suggestions would be great

Thanks,

Hey acravero,

If you dont mind, would you do me favor and post your static setttings for me to compare with, I know they wont be exactly the same, but I want to get a general feeling that im heading in the right direction :)

Thanks in advance

I'm not sure if this will work for you, but here goes:

Go to Control Panels-->Network (on CE device)

Props/ID tab
Network ID: UserID
PW: PW
Workgroup: YourWorkgroup

Select WLAN card props:
<check>Specify IP Address
IP: 192.168.0.24 (between 1 and 254--this will be CE device's IP address)
Subnet: 255.255.255.0 (assigned by router, I think)
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1 (Router)

Name Server tab
PDNS: 192.168.0.1 (Router)
SDNS: <blank>
PWINS: 192.168.0.2 (or whatever computer you're connecting to--intranet IP)
SWINS: <blank>

***************
Good luck! Let me know how it turns out. Also, you may need to assign your IP out of range of your DHCP settings on your router. So, if your router's DHCP is 1-99, try assigning 101 to your Mobilepro.

Let me know how it turns out! It was a LOT of trial and error for me.

OK, Sorry I havent replyed in a while. here's the scoop......

I am going NUTZ!!!! Ive tried every suggestion that ppl have given me and a few ive thought of myself and nothing seems to make it any better. about the only good news is that the DHCP errors have gone away w/ specfiying an IP address.

What Im wondering now is weather there is sumthing i need to do in the router itself. I already updated to the latest firmware. tried it w/ and w/o WEP enabled etc there are only 2 things that i see as being strange.

1. just about every time I power off my HPC I have to reset it inorder to get the WiFi card working in it

2. my AP is setup currently to be a gateway, not a router.

im beginning to think that mabey the HPC just isnt going to get on the net wireless.......

thanks for all the help. and im sorry if I sound like im bitching

I hate to break it to you poptart, but after finally getting through to the linksys people, they informed me that the cf wireless card is actually NOT compatible with wince 2.11, but only with wince 2000. Save it for when you get the 790 or the 900, cause I'm afraid it will never work. I travelled down your road already and am positive about that.

Sorry bud!

I bought mine brand new because their website says its compatible, but the tech affirmed that it is not.

but im not using the CF WiFI Card. Im using the PCMCIA version. but I imagine that there isnt a difference hmm?

It's of no concequence anyways, im going to be purchasing a compatible one within the next day or so. which could work in my favor, ill have one for my laptop and one for my HPC

now ive been looking thru the previous posts regarding compatible card. I'm assuming that there isnt any problems interfacing these cards w/ my linksys WiFi router. would this be correct?

Well, I finally broke down & bought a CF WiFi Card. thebrand name is Ambicom (I think) and it works perfectly. thenI spent another 12 bucks and bought a PCMCIA CF reader so I can run the card in either slot!! anyways wanted to thank everyone for their input

after reading this thread

I got a Linksys WPC11
for my Intermec 6651. found the Wince driver on the web.

it works perfectly.

COOL. surfing at 800x480 is pretty good, and hot as crappy as on a PPC. like a regular desktop tho abit slower (but way faster than dial-up)

now I can kinda use this and not have to rely on my desktop for email and surfing anykmore

about other people's experiences so I don't have to repeat a mistake.

Thanks to all who posted in this thread. I recently bought a used Avaya wireless card on eBay for $20. It works perfectly in my 780 through my Netgear MR814 router.

I didn't have to do a thing except install the drivers and turn the thing on.

Plugged in the NIC and the light came on, used a couple of different web browsers and connected perfectly.

While I won't do any serious surfing with this thing due to speed, it is nice to have the capability when you want it.

I also have a 3Com Air Connect card with WinCE drivers, and it works perfectly with my laptop, but I could never get it to work with my Mobilepro....

Kudos to all!

How did you get the ambicom cf card to work. I installed the driver from the disk, inserted the card, and tried to use the utility to set it up. When I went either to mail or the web my 780 said that it could not find the card?

How do I get it to recognize the wifi card?

Poptart629
11-27-2003, 02:40 AM
I pretty much plugged the thing, installed the driver, set the SSID & the web level I wanted and it worked. One thing to make sure of is weather or not your MP is detecting the card. A good sign of this is to run the MP on the battery then plug the card in, it should ask if you want to run it on the battery. this will at least tell you if your MP is even detecting that you've inserted the card. all though it that doesnt mean its necessarily functional. What is the exact error your getting? it could be that you need to specify an IP address in the control panel.

Good Luck!

I installed the Ambicon wlc1100-cf on my 780 -

took some futzing to make it work but works well -

I installed it in the pc slot with an adapter but when I tried it in the cf slot it did not work.

Not sure what is up but as long as it is working I am satisfied.

I recently purchased a Senao CF WiFi card for my MP 780. After installing the software/drivers, when I try to run the status program, I get the message: "Cannot find 'WLANSTA' (or one of its components)." In addition to the wlansta.exe file, I've also got the following .dlls that were installed with the program file:

wlanioc.dll
wlannds.dll
wlanres.dll

and the following file, which I installed manually because it supposedly offered a 'fix' to the error I am receiving:

mfcce400.dll

Also in my Windows folder is the file, wlancfg.cpl. Nothing happens when I click on this control panel file.

Any advice?

davestea
12-14-2003, 10:43 AM
- What happens if you run wlansta.exe directly? By clicking the exe icon directly? Does it run? Get an error?

- Are you running the status program from a shortcut? Find out where it is pointing - maybe all the parts are not where they belong. If the short cut point to a different location, try putting all the part in the indicated folder.

- I know that my Ambicon will not do anything at all if the CF card is not plugged in. What slot are you using? What kind of a card is it? Can you put it in the CF slot in front? Or, if you have it in there, do you have a PC card adapter. I installed my Ambicon in the adapted PC slot, put it in the CF slot and it would not work.

After that you are back at Senao support - where it sound like you may have already been.

Let us know what happens -

That's Interesting. I put my Ambicom card in either slot and it works just fine. Although I think I had to restart my mp 780, but im not sure on this point. I just know that mine will work in either slot.

I'm running wlansta.exe directly (I don't know if it's related, but the icon is the generic Windows icon for .exe programs - the one that looks like a little program window - as opposed to having a program-specific icon).

I've got a PC card adapter, so I've tried this CF card in both slots.

How does one restart a 780? Ctrl-Alt-Del just brings up the task manager, and the power button only puts it into suspend. I've even tried removing the battery (darn backup battery). I'd like to at least try restarting, and see if that helps.

Usually just shutting the unit down, remove the card, then re insert it & power on again will do it. although, if this doesnt work there is a reset button on the botton of the unit. I think this is a "soft" reset, meaning that no data will be lost, but you may want to make a backup of your mp data before trying the reset button as im not absolutly sure about this point

I broke down and bought the Ambicom CF card, thinking that would help, since Ambicom is listed on Chris De Herrera's Windows CE Website as being compatible with CE3.0 and the Senao card isn't listed.

I ran the install program, inserted the card, got the msg asking if I wanted to use the card on battery power, then got a msg from the WLAN configuration program telling me to reset my device. I reset, and get the last 2 msgs all over again..and so on, and so on, and so on...

If I try to run the configuration program, I get an error msg telling me to insert the card. Of course, the card is already inserted (when the card's not there, it doesn't tell me to reset the device).

I just can't win.

Make sure you are downloading or using the proper driver. Your 780 does not have WinCE 3.0 as the operating system as you implied in your last message. It has WinCE 2.11, so use the 2.1 version of the drivers.

You have CE 3.0 versions of some of the programs, i.e. Word, Excel, etc...but the core operating system is not 3.0

I checked Amibcom's web site and they do have the drivers there that you need from their description. Someone else who uses the Ambicom CF Ethernet card might jump in and give some advice or help....

That was it.

Silly me, I had gone into the system info in control panel and seen (in bold): Microsoft® Windows® CE, Handheld PC Edition Version 3.01 . I didn't know that the Core System Version beneath that was the actual version #.

That's probably why the Senao didn't work, too, and they didn't have drivers available for CE2.1 that I could see.

Thanks.

Might sound like a stupid question but here goes:

1. For the person with the Linksys WP11 card: Did it work no problems for you (I assume its a PCMCIA card) with the MP780

2. The Ambicom card: I guess this is a CF card. (My delima is I already have a CF Memory card (256MB) that I am sorta using in a permanent way) Can I put this in the PCMCIA slot? How fast is it while surfing?

3. Not sure how to word this but here goes:

With these wireless cards, can I access the internet say at Starbucks or an airport that has designated "hot spots"

and....

With any of these above mentioned cards, can I use my Lynksys wireless router to get online while sitting on my living room couch! :) (Which would be really cool!!!!)

Thanks for listening,

Corey

I can't answer some of your questions since they are hardware specific, but I can give you a few ideas to think about.

Your question #1 & #2: I used my cf slot for a memory card with extra software and data files too, hence my use of a pcmcia wireless card. It takes me about 45 seconds to load the average web page on my 770, 37 seconds on my 780 and maybe 35 seconds on my 790...only because the 790 uses a little bit different browser, but the colors on the 790 are true, that is they match my desktop computer whereas the 770/780 seem to interpret them differently or drop them entirely.

#3: hostspots work great...I've used mine in both the airport lobby and hotel lobbies in several cities with no problem.

And finally, I don't have a Linksys, I have a Netgear 814 wireless router, but I can sit in my recliner and use the mobilepro while watching tv. Heck, I can walk over to my apartments laundry room, about 70 feet away and do my wash and use the internet. Pretty cool.

looking for a wireless card for my mp780... i don't know much about wireless networks though. so:

1) aret here different types of wireless networks? how will i know what sort of card i need or whether or not i'll get on the network?

2) i recall something about A B and C versions... which is most popular, which should i get, etc... considering im living on campus and in dorms.

3) do different cards get different range? how can i find one with the best range?

4) is there a cleaner list somewhere of which cards are known to work with which devices? this forum is great, but tough to sift through!

thanks so much!

im looking on ebay, and they say win ce 3.x compatable but dont' mention 2.11! are there different avaya wireless cards around, or if i buy one will it be the right one? and whats this about speed? isn't 11mbps pretty darn fast?

There may be variations in the Avaya wireless cards, but from what I understand, both the Silver and Gold cards work fine.

On the CD that came with mine, in the "drivers" subfolder, there are subfolders for the HPC 2000 and the HPC Professional. I used one on my 780 and the other on my 790. The card works great in both machines.

Yes, 11 mb/sec is fast...standard 802.11b speed. As a matter of fact, it transfers data faster than the Mobilepro can process it, so even with wireless, there is a lag time...for instance, it took me 20+ seconds to load up http://www.pdastreet.com/forums.
