hello everyone,

I am a student in the market for a low cost palm and i found a deal for a refurbished palm IIIxe for $80 canadian. This is the best price i've ever seen and im thinking of getting it.
i know the III series is out of production but i was wondering how it stacked up against the newer palms...like the zire and 100 series. Will it be able to run the same apps? i understand that the IIIxe runs the palm OS 3.5 while newer palms run versions 4+. what is the difference?

will the IIIxe have most of the functions as the newer models?

thanks

OS3.5 will run almost any Palm app you can find. OS4 has support for memory cards, which the IIIxe does not have. The 8MB memory is good for plenty of names, appointments, programs.

Don't get a Zire - no backlight, no cradle, 2MB memory. The rechargeable battery is nice, though.

Plus the IIIxe can be upgraded the OS 4.x using the upgrade CD that Palm sells if you really need any newer features.

What OS4.1 feature is useful on a IIIxe?

I'm not sure what the buyer wants, but here (http://www.palm.com/software/palmosupgrade_4-1/) is the upgrade list.

A new Note Pad and updated onscreen keyboard are shown. If you have a compatible wireless phone you can also use the mobile connectivity features in the software.

I imagine one could connect the palm through the cradle to your PC -- I've done so to my linux desktop just to see it work -- but I don't know how useful that is and doubt it would be all that easy.

I've used a IIIxe since they came out and it has been very reliable. The 8MB of memory is a must.

My wife and I both have had matching Palm IIIe's for quite some time. When hers stopped working I decided to get her a IIIxe for her birthday.

I ended up taking a chance and got this instead.

iPAQ 3670 from ebay (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=38331&item=3017745906&rd=1)

Going from a Palm OS to Pocket PC 2000 is a culture shock. It's not quite like Windows on a PC, but it's very useful.

Anyway, my point is for under $150 there are many options in the used PDA market. The IIIxe seems to be a really nice unit. I'd gladly replace my IIIe with it. I may be saving up for another iPAQ though.

Check the prices for refurbs on gethightech.com. I liked my IIIxe but loved my Vx.

I checked gethightech. They are out of IIIex at this time. Price about $65 USD when they are in stock. Nice price on the IIIc, $99.

I've had my IIIxe for some time now and with OS 4.1 things are even better. If you really want it to perform well, pick up a copy of Afterburner and QuickBits. Afterburner at the very least. I have both and my IIIxe is significantly faster than even a visor platinum.

Both are available from PalmGear
